Congratulations on your well-deserved win. You cleverly used this flash fiction opportunity to introduce a rare eye condition that many may not be familiar with. The factor that make this story profound is the true, blue friendship of two young friends. Your picture (you don't mention where it is from) is perfect.

I thought this story about two friends was very poignant, with a well chosen image to accompany it.
Taking into account the symbolism of the rose as a gift of gratitude and love for her friend, we also learn about Emmaline's skewed interpretation of colour which, in the circumstances (i.e having to face the bully and possible ridicule at school on a regular basis) makes her appear even stronger when she manages to push past them - despite her embarrassment - focusing only on the importance of her mission.
I especially like your mention of the 'familiar scent of roses' which acts as a calming influence, soothing Emmaline and giving her the strength she needs to fulfill the task that is so important to her.

What a very sweet and original story meeting the requirements of a quite challenging brief! I like the way that this also conveys a message about protanopia and is complemented by a delightful image. Well done and good luck! Debbie

Thank you, Debbie. The disease is rare, as is a "true blue" friendship. As always, I appreciate your kindness.

Very interesting angle on the blue rose prompt for the Story - while at the same time informing the reader (in a palatable manner) of this rare condition - lovely pic

A sweet story about acceptance and friendship, as well as being informative about the condition of protanopia. There are in fact roses which are almost blue. Well done. Best wishes.

My husband has red/green colour-blindness. He gave me a ring with pink stones in it, thinking they were blue. It's extremely rare for women to have the condition. I think it needs both parents to have the gene?
The story works beautifully with the prompt, using the "true blue" for something that truly wasn't. It's all about perception.

Hi. This looks like a good entry for the contest. Good luck with that.!
This is heartwarming!! Maddy is a true friend. There is a lot of love between these two girls
I was hoping that the class bully would get his comeuppance. Maybe next time. My husband was almost colorblind like that he could not tell the difference between some blues and blacks or blues and greens.
Good job. Thank you for sharing.

Tiny droplets formed on the roses' smooth petals, a safe distance from the dangerous landscape of the stems below.
Great imagery here. Thanks for sharing your work. It was strong all the way through.
