Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. Yes, Postpartum depression is a huge problem, and unfortunately often goes unreported. I enjoyed reading and good luck with the contest.

This is an excellent poem with a depth of complexity that a mere mortal will probably never fully understand. If I get what you're saying, I think you're telling us there's hope in spite of hurt. I think you're saying that the roots tether a mother to her children in ways that need the years of fermentation like a fine wine to bring out the very best. I think you're also saying there are no perfect apple trees or perfect apples but if time and nurturing are applied the results can be pretty awesome. Thanks

Jessica, This is a very nice and very well written poem you have penned about a woman for the contest. You used great descriptive words and very lovely imagery with the picture of the apple tree. Best wishes in the contest. love and blessings, Teri

This was a very beautiful piece. it takes you through the life of a woman and shows you her pain and heartache but that even though she has fallen she has gotten back up. This encourages the reader to stay stong and tells them there is a light at the end of that tunnel.

"For My Mom" Oh, how so sweet of you.
"too young to see,
what has her by the roots;
she can't break free." Good use of personification.
"A buried burden born" Good 'b' words alliteration.
"a broken tree
could look upon her child
with apathy." Hmm, was your mom the depressed, broken tree?
"The shackles of neglect
that I knew well" Such a sad metaphoric imagery here.
"sometimes, we have to fall
to understand." Profound words!
"She severed both our chains,
she set us free," Did your mother let you go for your own--and her--good?
An amazing poem of tribute to an imperfect mother whose imperfections towards you made you stronger. Brilliantly expressed! Very best of luck in the contest! (I felt you should have placed in the erotic one)

Your poem is as close to perfection as allowed this side of heaven. Blessed are you to use your talent in such a way -- to reach out and show both the sorrow and the joy of healing. There is help. Women have too long suffered in silence, often shamed for not being the "cheerful mom" expected by society. Every stanza is a gem. You are a gem!

I'm glad the females in my life seemed to handle early motherhood very well indeed, there's something amazing about the bonds tied in those early years, I have always been in awe of them, this is so beautifully written Jessica, blessings Roy

This poem beautifully expresses not only the difficulties of a fall that we've taken. It also expresses the hope that is ahead with the proper care from others. I hope that the phone number that you give here for help for mothers who are going through postpartum depression will help someone who is fighting that demon. Patricia .
