Hah! Wendy!
I, too, am a "Mollydooker!" How I love that moniker = certainly new to me!
And how I know I would absolutely love "Miss Six!" What a creative and interesting little girl who is sure to go far in life! I was astonished to read of her stick figure drawing of you!
I can still remember my second-grade teacher, a Dominican nun, constantly standing by my desk and turning my paper so that it would lie on the table the way a right-handed paper would place it when writing. And just as quickly as she would turn it, I would turn it back to the way I needed it to be able to write! Believe me, she noted my stubbornness! I don't recall ever being physically punished by her, but I do remember her publicly attempting to humiliate me!
I so enjoyed reading your work this morning!
Thank you for sharing,
Fondly,
Mollydooker diane

I am so glad this one resonated with you! I am equally glad those days of bossy and intolerant teachers are over. Thank you for a wonderful review - and I am hugely encouraged by the six stars, so thank you for those too.

Awesome and definitely sets her aside from the others, but for a good reason. Mike was lefthanded ...he always had to sit to my left or we bumped elbows. Wendy, my daughter that passed, wrote from right to left for a very long time. I remember the teachers being so frustrated with her. I am so glad that Miss Six does not have to experience any of that. Instead, she can be proud of all her accomplishments, because there is nothing wrong with being different. Matter of fact, you can stand out above the crowd. Excellent!
Smiles, Carol

Yes, I hope she sees that she is equally accepted and just as special. I think her mother was quite pleased that they have this common bond - and perhaps a bit of relief that one of hers would "get" her leftie explanations and help. Thank you so much for this lovely review. A pity teachers weren't more accepting in your daughter's schooldays.

Well, it sounds like she's already figured out how to do things her way. That will help her in the long run. She has the much sought after trait of critical thinking. Not a lot of children have that. I enjoyed reading about that and applaud you for admitting your awkwardness around it. Great story. Gretchen

Thanks so much, Gretchen. A lovely review. I think lefties must have to rewire their brain somehow to adapt to tools and musical instruments etc designed for the right-handed majority.

Excellent writing. Terrific research. And you are correct, lefties face an uphill battle.
I remember left-handers in Marine Corps boot camp. The M-14 rifle ejected spent shells up and away - to the right. With left-handed shooters up and to the right sometimes landed super hot shells on the back of their necks when firing in the prone position.
Best wishes.

Wow, that could be dangerous for lefties!! Yes, it is an uphill battle for them I think. Perhaps that's why many are gifted - because they have had to work out solutions for everything designed for right handers and learn to train their bbrains to adapt for their own needs. Thanks for a positive review.

Wendy, I like this! You cleverly mix the narrative about Miss Six with information you have researched about Southpaws, many of them famous. I note you have included Leonardo da Vinci. I haven't checked this but I believe he was actually ambidextrous - able to write and draw equally skillfully with either hand and possibly even to write with both hands at once.

You could probably write a whole volume about famous left-handed sportsmen. Sometimes, as in tennis and boxing, it may give them an advantage in that their opponents are not used to the unusual stance and ball direction. I believe golfers traditionally had to play right-handed because that was how the clubs were designed. In more recent times that has all changed and you can easily buy clubs designed for southpaws. In New Zealand one of our most famous sporting heroes was Bob Charles - the first player playing left-handed to win a Major - the 1963 British Open

Thank goodness for common sense that eventually ruled not to punish left-handed children! And thank you for sharing this delightful post.

Steve

Thank you so much for this absolutely delightful review and thoughtful comments. We are both right re Leonardo da Vinci. Apparently he was born left-handed but had to learn to write with his right hand so became adept at writing and painting with both. Gifted man! Yes, left handed sports people - that is a fascinating subject. Yes, golf would be very hard to play without left handed clubs, so very good that lefties are now catered for. Musicians too are also disadvantaged eg re flutes and guitars.
Thank you so much also for the six stars - a lovely surprise.
    Cheers,

You made me smile here Wendy as I know this word well and at one time it was totally taboo to be left handed and people even thought that there was something wrong with a person who was left handed! How ridiculous is that! I enjoyed your fine story about your Granddaughter and I loved the picture too. A fine presentation and a joy to read. Love Dolly x x x
