A tale well told. The well-travelled man is seldom either bigoted or racist. One soon learns about the commonality of the human condition and the basic humanity of people worldwide. Your story is a powerful reminder of this.

I wish I had said in the story what you said so eloquently in your review. Thank you for a wonderful review.- Bill

A lovely story with a fine message of brotherhood! Fishing is one of those activities that seems to produce a peace and tranquility, conducive to bonding and friendship. A spiritual union perhaps. Para starting: My father was - should this read: My father(,) a professional fisherman(,) and I fished all my life...? An inspiring write for the contest. Good luck, William! Debbie

This a wonderful story - very uplifting. After reading it through twice, I find myself jealous and wish I had such a poignant and beautiful memory to fall back on. Come to think of, I do, so thanks for the inspiration.

I remember because as soon as I got back to the ship, I wrote what I call progress notes about the event. I knew someday that I would be able to write about it. I have dozens of files that will push me to write about them.
Thank you for your review and I expect you to tell me when you make it available. I want my chance at it. -Bill

I have had these encounters in my travels, and they are truly not only the precious postcards we will take back with us, but their messages linger. Brotherhood shares the same language. Beautiful story.

Glinda, what a wonderful gift. We too have done extensive traveling and I'm always on the look out for engagement with residents. Again, thank you for your review. -Bill

Your last line says it all! We can all come to this realization in a million different ways, with a million different interactions with other people IF we just open our eyes and see it and get over our us/them mentality that invades every part of life. I enjoyed your fishing story and your route to the realization of being part of the human race!

Thank you, Julie for understanding the purpose of this story. It was disappointing when reviewers wanted to know about the fate of the frozen bread vs the fate of the world. Thanks, Julie. -Bill

You jogged a story hidden deep in my memories with your story and I am grateful. I, too, remember my father (an old German raised in the depression) using stale bread on his hooks to catch our dinner. You added so much warmth to your story and I truly enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
Smiles, Carol

My wife's name is Carol. I was raised by a fisherman but no stale bread. We were on our hands and knees late at night, fining night crawlers!
Thank you for sharing your story. This story has motivated a number of people to share their fish story.
Thank you for feeling the story. -Bill................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ ..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

I was my father's dew worm champion. LOL I could catch them with both hands, two at a time. Strange but it's one of the few good memories I have of sharing with him. Carol

Carol, you have no idea how blessed I am that my story was able to remember what i sense was a good man. I hope you will some day pull that memory out and on paper.

A very stern German but I guess we had our moments. Strange ? as we age we take a different viewpoint on our past. Have a nice evening. Carol

This is a lovely story and I love it even more knowing that it is true. Two old men fishing with only bread on a hook and giggling like two schoolboys who were playing hooky. The tale brings us closer to being who we were meant to be. One with nature and one with each other. Humankind is perfect when left to do what they are meant to accomplish on this earth.

This is a well-written story. There is a great lesson in this story which is revealed in the last sentence of this story. I have never heard of catching fish with stale bread. Your story reads well. I enjoyed reading this. Nice job.

Thank you for your review. This is entered in the True Story contest. I will be promoting it more aggressively starting Wednesday. I appreciate your comment of it being well-written. Atleast I will be able to be competitive with those who seem to live on FS. Regarding fishing with bread. The hooks were very small and could be put into the bread. This made the last longer. In 0 minutes we had a bucket full of fish. He would take these and use them for bait, changed to larger hooks and he was on his way. I've had frustrated readers ask why I didn't complete the story about the bread. I intentionally left it out so that the point of the story would not be competing with it. You are the only one that got this information. Thanks again.-Bill

Bill, this is a really great story you have written. We do have those moments and they are special. Today as Tom and I were cleaning the church we took time and pulled up the old dead flowers. It is when I am doing something I feel like for the Lord I feel so blessed. Thank you for always sharing with us! Blessings, Teri

I won't be "promoting" this until March 5 so that it is still active for the contest. And thank you for reviewing this piece. Teri, you are so gracious with you words. I have discovered that I will always experience God's Kingdom whenever I honor the question, "Who is my neighbor?" I'm not a prolific writer here on FS, but I have my fifth book coming out this Spring...Teachable Moments: Lessons to Enrich Our Mental Health, Our Spiritual Journey and Our Relationships. I'll let you know when it come out. -Bill

Thank you so much Bill for telling me about that. At some point I want to start looking for your books. They really touch my heart. How are you doing these days? My doctor took me off the MS meds. I still have the lesions, but not new ones in a long time.

I battle Parkinson's and punish myself if I even miss one "medicine time." I was up in Seattle last week meeting the team that bought my practice. They surprised me with more than 20 families that all came together that I had cared for them and their child who died while in my care. All sharing their stories and the role I played in their lives. Some of their stories are in one of my books. They also asked how I was doing and all I could say was that I missed the action. But my family doesn't. Sorry. I'm rambling. Have a good Sunday. Carol and I will be joining a new church tomorrow. -Bill
-
That is wonderful for you and Carol. Tom and I started going to a new church about 3 or 4 weeks ago. It was one of the best things we ever did. I will be praying for you and Carol. I battle with MS, but the good Lord is always with us!

My wife and I have been to Mykonos twice, also to the jewel of the Greek islands, Santorini, a deeply spiritual place, once on a cruise, once on a spontaneous visit to turkey and the islands, I've seen many sunsets in foreign lands, all significant, but none more the sitting atop a cliff sipping an expensive coffee, beautifully written Bill, I wonder what your stories would go with a poetic verse attached, blessings Roy

Roy, good suggestion. Let me work on that. And, as always, your review of my sporadic contribution in FS is always appreciated. I won't be promoting this until March 5 so that it is still active during the contest voting. -Bill
