Oh, Jim - I found this one incredibly touching. It disturbs me greatly when people are abusive to animals, and this was heightened for me by the intelligence of the characters involved here on both sides of the equation. Chip was so worth saving and Doctor Price so should have known better.

You are so right! I'm glad this was pure fiction. Maybe it will open someone's eyes to the [light of animals. The Bible says "The merciful man doeth good to his beast", meaning, if we are merciful, we will treat the animals well.

I really loved this piece! I so enjoyed that you evoked compassion, humor, and a lesson all in one. Brilliant take on the painting. All the best to you and I look forward to reading more of your work.

I'm very grateful to you for such kind words!

We are learning something quickly about Moira: "Her heart reached out for someone to love." they are comforting each other: "Lord Buckingham, you are just so cuddly. I'm sorry you have to put up with those awful needles." This could be the case with anything: "Listen, you get paid to clean and feed this monkey like all the test animals. Stay out of our affairs!" Ooof. This is so poignant and it angers me. You did well to elicit such intense emotion.

What a lovely story but with this sad ending! I know Chip's life wasn't worth living and he did it for Moira, but I'm still left feeling quite sorry. Your write is faultless and reads clearly and fluently with excellent and credible dialogue (even from Chip:)). Well done on this club entry, Jim, and for stirring such emotion. Take care Debbie

And I'm glad to be hearing for you. If I could, I'd put a smile on your face, but some things in life do not end so happily.

Not really to my taste, but it is well written. Personally, I would have Moira open his cage and aiding his escape. Further, I would have Moira telling the "Doctor" that "Chip" told her that he was going home, slam down her bucket, and say "I quit!" You are hateful and stupid, And have no business dealing with any living creature. After she gets home, she lets chip out of her car, and they make banana and peanut butter sandwiches. Karen

That ending would be great, but Moira was no hero. A hero fights for something beside him or herself, for a causse. Moira was very compassionate but not a hero, allowing herself to be bullied by Dr, Price.

I still like my way better :-)
Howsomeever, you are entitled to write anyway you wish, I will read.Karen

I wasn't putting down your way. I just wrote what God and my inner writer made me write.

This is quite a tale. It seems that the monkey in the lab is much more intelligent than humans. At least he was well loved by the lab assistant. Excellent writing here with a smooth flow of story and well developed characters. Your words give a voice to all the animals who are suffering in labs.

Oh, what a story! I'm so sad. You really came up with a whole book condensed into this flash fiction. You developed your characters and gave us a thoughtful consideration about the cruelty of humans (the researchers) and the best of humans (Moira). Great piece. Virtual six!

okay, you made me cry with this sad story, but I get the moral, it better to be true to yourself that to be an exhibit of arrogance. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.
