This is a very warm and relatable story. I could feel your pain and other emotions every inch of the way. And your think outside the box essay idea was great. It enabled everyone to learn about Michigan in a fun, informative and engaging way.

Thank you. The town kids were snobs and bullies. They looked down on all of us country kids. They never changed in the four years I was there. It did hurt my feelings, but I was too shy to speak up.

What a brilliant story and how naturally told. I couldn't believe I had read so much in such a short time - the mark of good story telling.
[Just to mention a typo in the title - you are, sadly a 'Couutry Bumpkin.]
Well, we were cheering you on all the way, because being an 'outsider' can be a very painful and damaging experience - and we see on tv all the time the way in which (particularly American) schoolgirls have a rigid pecking order. So your survival was heroic, and it looks like the die was cast' when you stormed the contest.
A nice touch at the end to have avoided the speech to the school! I hope your shyness wore off eventually. Very well told and presented. You haven't lost your gift, I see.

Thank you, and thanks for catching the error. I edited the story but never looked at the title. I have corrected it now.

Thank you. We understood from the start that the scholarship would go to a senior. I would have hated to speak in front of the whole school anyway.

This is a really good article, and you did the right thing to end with the description of the very creative essay you wrote. I understand your nervousness with moving to a big school. I had six years in a two-room country school then 2 years in a parochial school where I could not convince the girl scout leader that I was not a third grader. Fortunately, I grew during 8th grade, so I wasn't freaky tiny when I entered the huge high school. I'll bet you felt high school was like a foreign country like I did.

Thank you. I had the opposite problem. I was taller than most girls, and a lot of the boys. The townies made fun of me, calling me stilts and high pockets. When one is a teen, it doesn't take much to cause humiliation and pain.

The one thing one has to learn to do is to recite poetry at an open mic event, and that has been my weakness too, so I know how you feel, but at lest you've overcome certain things in your life, by putting yourself out there...here, well done, blessings Roy

Thank you. Public speaking is still something I would avoid at all costs. It's good to know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I learned as a musician, but I?m not a natural. Bless you

Life is beautiful when you can appreciate it from the perspective of the adult. I think you did a pretty good thing surviving high school. Thank you so much for sharing and good luck with the contest.

Thank you. The townies were a mean bunch. They made life miserable for country kids.
