This is a great story, Wendy! That little gem of information was, as you say, simple and yet profound because we all think we understand these creatures but, in fact, still have so much to learn about basic psychology. Forget the fancy stuff and start with the fundamentals. I know, for a start, if anyone calls me Deborah instead of Debbie, I immediately freeze and think I'm in trouble (my parents never called me Debbie not least because I annoyed them rather a lot). Thank you once again for this very interesting and helpful story. I learn so much about animals from you and am still thinking about the poor old Tasmanian Devil:( Take care Debbie x

Thank you so very much Debbie. Yes, our name is intrinsic to our identity and self-acceptance, because of everything we associate with it. If his name was always associated with cruelty it would be impossible to act differently from cowering whenever we heard it. If the Tassie devil was called something else he might not be so feared and looked down on. Thanks for a wonderful review.

This never occurred to me! Your theory has been researched and according to a website called ***coddled critters (dot) com***
"In many cases of abuse, a dog's name was repeatedly spoken during the abuse, so it might be a good idea to rename him to alleviate some of the negative feelings he has toward his existing name."
A new name, A new start!
Thanks for sharing!

You are wonderful. Thanks for looking it up. I am glad to hear that research validated this anecdotal experience. Irene also mentioned a change in her rescued dog after she got a new name. Thanks so much for your thoughtful and helpful review.

SO interesting! When did it become illegal (or whatever) so type a website for citation purposes?
-
Why? What happened? Illegal?
-
When I tried to type in the website a pop-up came up saying I was unable to do so. I'll try it again here, maybe it was one of those whacky glitches?
https://coddledcritters.com/
-
Hmmm. I stand corrected! This time it went through! (Sigh...I thought I'd missed a new rule!)
-
Who challenged you? FS?
-
It was a FS "pop-up" stating (I forgot the exact wording) that I was unable to provide other website addresses...
Hmmmm. Haunted computer?
-
That?s a bit creepy.

Hi, Wendy. This a great post. My husband and I adopted a dog from a humane society many years ago that was terrified of everything. I have no idea what her name was before, but we started calling her "Roxie." She quickly grew to love us and has been an amazing dog ever since. She's been with us through the birth of all four of our children and still going. I hadn't considered things being as simple as changing their names, but I wonder if you're not on to something. A very interesting and well-written post. Thank you for sharing and have a great week. Blessings to you...

Thank you very much Irene. I wonder if it was the fact that you gave her a new name was part of her solution as well, along with your love. She sounds lovely, a beautiful and loving companion. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and for reviewing. Always appreciate it.

Thank you for sharing this experience with us. I do understand how changing a dog's name could help. It makes sense. I know the names of all the dogs in our neighborhood. I'm not sure about humans' names.

Thank you so much for reviewing. It?s easier somehow to remember the dogs and their personalities. Thanks for reviewing. Always grateful.

Hi Wendy,
This is an interesting essay about how horribly dogs are treated sometimes by cruel owners, and how changing their name might spark new life into them when rehoming one.
We tend to call our dogs and cats by people names... for cats, we've had Fred, Max, Roger, Chico, and Raymond. We've had 3 cairn terriers... Willie, Gracie, and Annie. We also had a Lhasa Apso named Bonnie. All our dogs are waiting for us in Heaven now. And as for the cats, we only have Ray left, an orange tabby. We lost Chico and Angel this year. We lost Roger, our beautiful Maine Coon, in September of 2020.
We've always treated our pets like people.
I just noticed how good you're doing in Fanstory this year, Wendy... #1 in Short Works, #42 in Poetry, and #10 in Reviewing. That's impressive! Good for you, my dear!
Hugs,
Kimbob

How caring you are! Many thanks for a lovely review. But also for making so many animals happy and giving them a life filled with love. Thank you for your kind words re rankings. I rarely post poetry these days, just focussing on prose as I run out of time for both. I like to try to keep up with reviewing as others do me the kindness of reviewing my work.
How are you and your family health wise now? Hopefully all well ?. ?
Thanks again.

Hi Wendy, our granddaughter (Alyssa) just came down with Covid a week ago. She probably caught it at school. But it was a mild case, and none of the rest of us caught it (her mother Laura, my wife Judy, or me). And she tested negative on Sunday morning. She went back to school today.
I've had a terrible 10 days with pain in my left jaw. It's been unbearable, and I'm full of Advil and Tylenol 3 with codeine. But I have just one antibiotic pill left to take in the morning. And I've got an appointment on Thursday afternoon at 3pm for a root canal. Hopefully, that will do the trick. It's been very rough! I had a molar removed about 3 weeks ago. It healed up nice, but it was a difficult extraction. Hopefully there was no permanent nerve damage in my jaw. I don't need chronic pain.
I guess it's just bad news from this end, eh? But that's why I haven't been able to write or review much lately.
Thanks for asking!
Hugs,
Kimbob

Oh that?s not good. Don?t want to ring any alarm bells but my friend had that, just as you describe, and it turned out to be cancer of the jaw. He?s fine now, two years on, but a hard journey. So get them to check and be very alert. I?ll send up prayers for much wisdom for the dental team and for you. Along with my best wishes for a speedy recovery after the root canal treatment. Hugs to you.

I found this very interesting. Maybe it works for people as well because God often renamed people in the Bible. There is something in Revelations about got giving all overcomers a new name.

I think you are right. A name signifies one?s very identity and sense of worth. Many thanks for your review.

I enjoyed your story of the benefits of changing a dog's name. Sunny's name seems perfect for him. I'd never heard of changing a name making a mistreated dog better to deal with, but it makes sense! Maybe some people would be better adjusted with a name change. ; )

Thank you, Verna. So long as the name change is accompanied by love and acceptance. It does signify a new beginning. Many thanks for reviewing.

What a splendid story. I am not surprised at the new name. Iam sure I would respond better to 'Darling' rather than 'Bastard', as would most of us -- at least I think so.

Wow. What an excellent post, Wendy. As you know, I love dogs, we have three. Our golden retriever is so frightened by thunder and firecrackers, she turns into a shaking leaf as much as we all try to console her.
We hate to give her prescribed anxiety pills, though it helps. We feel so bad...
I enjoyed your story as it was told and very informative.
Thank you for sharing.

Well written.
I never thought of that. And it sounds so simple, exactly the appropriate thing to do. If after every time someone called "Wayne", I got smacked...
Best wishes.
