Oh yes, John, you've really struck a chord here. I can't bear any of it. But the truth is, none of it is that smart. It never works properly because it's designed by geeks who never get their heads out of a computer screen let alone live a normal life like everyone else. Your story reads so well with humour from the start and a wonderful way of mocking yourself - even if you really don't need to. Great read. Well done! Debbie

I was an early adopter of computers and even did a bit of serious programming for a while - until things like mouses and the internet made it too complicated for my poor brain.
I appreciate the self-deprecating humour here which eases the reader through the story. I wonder how panicky your daughter became when she realised that no amount of technology was able to lock her house long-distance!
I can share that ten years ago when we bought this house, sight unseen, and it came time for the previous owners to turn over the keys, there were no keys. Not because of technology - just that in rural New Zealand there was no need to lock the house!
