An eye-opener for sure. I found that two of my students preferred their own sex. Still, it's a shocker. I'm glad you are living in the right body now and happier. Good luck in the contest. I hope this wins.

Thank you. It was certainly an eye-opener at the time. My Dad was very old-fashioned and would have been shocked beyond words if he knew I had a friend of this nature.

Fascinating story. As they say "one dozen't always know what goes in behind closed doors"
And, you certainly had no clue.
But when you did reconnect you were open and accepting.
Bravo to you!!

Thank you. It was the early sixties and I thought gay meant someone was happy. It was a shock.

I am afraid times change and folks change in one way or the other. We don't quite understand all the reasons but it does. Back in my day you were lucky if you heard someone even mention the word sex, same sex partners or even sex change it was forbidden...
things are so different in this day and age.
Nice you were able to stay friends even though things were changed person wise. It's in all how you think about it.what does friend Shio mean to you?

Thank you, and thanks for the six stars. It was a whole different world when I grew up. We had to wear skirts to school, and profanity was not allowed. I never had any idea such things as same sex relationships existed. I thought gay meant someone was happy.

Dear fellow writer, What an amazing story! And what a feel-good conclusion, when you consider how many ways that could have gone wrong for Barb/Brandon!
Well, even in the UK, we hear stories of gender dysphoria every day, and most of us feel considerable sympathy for - often - quite young people both before and after puberty, who don't 'fit' their bodies. It wasn't so long ago that they were regarded as 'freaks' along with many LBGTIQA+ people.
And the road to getting appropriate surgery is by no means easy. Many hospitals will not do it - and the whole area is riven with controversy.
You have told this story of Barb and yourself so well - from the beginning when you couldn't figure out Barb's crush on Sandy - right through your fairly rocky domestic life. But you have kept, like a golden thread running through your story, your love of horses: they are what bound your destinies together - and brought Brandon back to you in the end. He became surely one of the finest farriers in the country - and was a faithful friend until story's end.
I enjoyed reading this unique story of friendship and mutual interest
Thank you.

Thank you. There is still a lot of hatred around the issue of same-sex relationships here in the United States. It is on the news almost every day when some business will refuse to serve people who have choosen this path in life. In Brandon's case, he was born with female parts on the outside and male parts inside. Probably the fetus originally was meant to be twins and one absorbed the other. It was hard for Brandon to find a doctor to help him, but he did in the end.

You're welcome.
It was an amazing story.

This is a fascinating story. It's hard to believe it's true. I especially like how you introduce the tale by describing how you and Barb worked in the stable and she learned smithing. The Scene where you meet Brandon (formerly Barb) is well done. I can only imagine your consternation. Rod

Thank you. It was quite a shock when I met Brandon in later years. The change was so complete you would never guess he started life as a woman. Even his voice was a man's voice.

A fascinating story, well written for this contest. How neat too that Barb and Sandy married in later years. Your story incorporates a modern day scenario which obviously surprised at first but the message being here that Barb had the courage and self-belief to become the farrier she wanted and later to undergo a complete sex change. In short she accomplished all her ambitions without feeling defined by her sex. Thanks for sharing and good luck! Debbie
