Will you look at that! What a piece of art and feeling and from the heart work this is!
I can identify completely with this. It is a mirror of my own. I choose to live a separate life from my family as they remain toxic today. Obviously brings a chord with me and is very well written. I must say you have exquisite word choice and you're lay out and you're repeated line after each stanza is extremely well done.
There was only one solution to this problem that requires a star rating! Hope you have a great day!

A really wonderful Canzonetta, Jessica, with a heartfelt repeated refrain.
I won't go through the technical stuff as your notes do it perfectly.
I didn't review it first time I saw it because it looked like it was going to be too painful to read, but second time round I can see how beautifully it is constructed, and with allusions rather than vivid descriptions. Phew!
It recalls Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and in particular Tammy Wynette's 'Stand by your Man' - though your version is more subtle.
It's interesting that you use 'And' rather than 'But' in your chorus, which begs the question of just how ironic that chorus is. It could be self-denying and sacrificial, but it could be said through clenched teeth, a blunt instrument in waiting. Either way you'll break free - but not if they arrest you later.
Perhaps I'll never know, but my guess is that you have already broken free by drawing a line under this part of your life.
A very skillful, heartfelt poem, which will resonate with many people.
Thank you, Jessica.

Paul, I love that you recognized the significance behind my use of "and". Thank you for this thoughtful review!

This is beautiful Jessica. I'm thinking hard about the characters here. I'm guessing you are the little girl and this is a man, or is this your little girl and this is about the experience of parenting. It doesn't matter as the writing is superb.

Unfortunately this is a truth of my childhood... Involving a parent and stepparent. But I've since healed! Your kind words are so appreciated.

It takes much courage and grace to forgive some-one who has wronged you - but it is healing and freeing to do so, and one can move on with head held high. I think you have chosen an excellent refrain line, and have developed the reason for the need of forgiveness (abuse, neglect, lack of care) very well throughout. Well done!

Outstanding piece of work, Jessica. I wish I had a six left.
That's two excellent pieces in a row I've read from Potlatch Club members; something must be going right in that group.
Perfect rhyme and meter, straightforward and appropriate language -- nothing to fault.
I think back to those who wronged me as a child (not my parents), and many decades later, I haven't gotten around to forgiving them... so well done on that front too :)

Yes, let the past be the past, as you said: " What's done is done; I can't undo
But I won't waste another day."
You made the right decision to make peace by " And I'll forgive you anyway."
To forgive is the most generous option... good choice.
Thanks for sharing

Whoa. This so totally needs a six; I'm very sorry I used mine up already this week. This is exceptional, Jessica: so taut with emotion and strength yet with an undertow of a childhood steeped in vulnerability and pain. Your talent is immense; sometimes that is a writer's trade-off for her pain. xoxox

The hurt of abuse and neglect come through in your Canzonetta poem Jessica but more importantly getting past that and moving on with forgiveness in your heart. A lovely, emotional write about a topic too many know first hand. Well written, Cheers
