Wow. This was very somber and sad. But you struck a cord with the line about the house having her presence and her absence. That was a line that said it all. He couldn't turn around with out some reminder of her yet she was gone forever. The story wad wonderful. Gretchen

Your story struck a chord or two with me and my latest struggles. I, too, attempted to write a similar storyline but found it too painful. You, on the other hand, have handled it very well. It's dreadful how families seem to lose track of the elderly and put little or no value in what was once a person's memories and keepsakes.

Job well done, Wendy. Good luck in the contest.
Smiles, Carol

Thank you for a wonderful review, and also for the beautiful stars. You have been such a wonderful and steadfast person of integrity in the lives of all your family so I hope and pray they are not neglecting you! Fortunately our Heavenly Father understands, and He certainly loves and values you. Thank you too for the good wishes. Wendy

First, I went in and corrected my faux pas three starred error As for this it happens regularly today. Family ain't what it once was when family lived in the same community. The places I lived were a Italian majority hood, a Jewish conclave of relatives, and where I was born everyone's name ended in ski!

Thank you Tom! I was a bit shattered to think you thought it wasn?t much good. But it is easy to slip.
You are right. Families often neglect the elderly and it is sad when they become too engrossed in their own lives. Thank you very much for reviewing. I do appreciate it.

Oh wow this is a sad one! I enjoyed the clever way in which your story was structured from the ghost viewpoint leading to the reader's realisation of this perspective. There then followed more detail of his sense of loss and loneliness because the heart of the home was so sadly missing. Your story as ever always plays with the reader's imagination, never spoon-feeding - with events thus having maximum impact! Thanks for sharing, Wendy, and good luck! Debbie

Hi Wendy.
Wow! What a story. I could feel the old man's emotion as he walked room to room being reminded of his long lost love. You depicted him as a loving, caring father and husband. His two boys basically abandoned him looking only for themselves. This became further evident when the cleared out the house in order to sell.

You have a clean contest contender if not winner!

Thank you so much John. Such a lovely review. Thank you very much for the affirmation of six stars too. Very precious. The standard of entries is often very high for these site contests. But I am very encouraged that you think it could be a possibility.

Nicely written.
The loneliness some experience while aging and dying is so different from the experiences of those surrounded by loved ones. And there are probably as many stories and reasons for one as the other.
Best wishes.

Unfortunately we reap what we sow in life and if we are abandoned by our kids in old age, then they probably have a good reason for it. A an outsider looking in we never know how someone behaved and detectives have to investigate to get to the truth. You created a mystery here Wendy and left us hanging up in the air with your final statements. I enjoyed your musings, I was entertained, a good entry for the contest, love Dolly x

Thank you, Dolly, for your thoughtful review. This story is a compilation of two real-life stories. In this case, there was no reason for the sons to abandon him for anything he had done, (just career prospects) but he was just very introverted, and they just grew apart. They all still visit regularly despite huge distances between them (different states). The ending was a different person, although this first one suffers from depression and sees no purpose in life alone which is very sad. I am glad it provoked thought, and left a little up in the air!
