Oh, goodness, Wendy!
What a moving and heartfelt offering.
Anyone who has had the honor of loving a dear pet will be able to relate to your well-crafted remembrance.
I am so very relieved you didn't choose to euthanize...
Thank you for sharing!

Rusty, a true hero! Our pets are also family, their heroic acts speak to their devotion and protective nature to their "humans."
I'm so pleased Rusty recovered without ongoing pain...
Jennifer had a canine angel who saved her life that day!

Absolutely right, in all your words. Dogs are indeed protective, and very vigilant. Thanks so much for your lovely review, Karenina.

Hi Wendy,
I had to look up "Kelpie", discovering it's a newer breed of Border Collie, very intelligent, a working dog that can herd and protect, a wonderful companion. They are cautious toward strangers, independent, and playful... a great choice for families with an active lifestyle.
We don't think sometimes. If only Dad hadn't shouted to his girls that evening while getting off the bus, Jennifer wouldn't have darted across the road right in front of that oncoming car. Who knows? ... maybe the oncoming car was exceeding the speed limit, too. But Rusty was a smart dog, and he leaped into action to protect the little girl, without any regard to himself. He was definitely a hero. Dogs are man's best friend. Yet, I think of so many dogs that are tied to a tree in the backyard. What a terrible way to treat a member of the family... like a prisoner. Why have a pet and treat them so cruelly? The owners are just lazy.
Terrific story, Wendy! I really enjoyed it. You classified it as general fiction, but did you own a Kelpie named Rusty? And did he save a little girl from being hit by a car? ... just wondering~
Hugs,

It is mostly non-fiction but some of the details are a bit blurred in my mind now, and yes, the girl was saved. Our dog was part Kelpie but he had a different name. I agree about dogs just being left on their own all day - and tied to a tree, that is just horrendous. Such people should not be allowed to have a pet.
Thanks for your lovely review.

You set the scene well with this Aussie childhood memory - it felt so familiar to me with neighbourhood kids playing, the kelpie, the fathers arriving home, and family activities. You portrayed the dramatic event most realistically - I felt a chill of foreboding as the accident was imminent, then flinched when Rusty screamed in pain. Bravo to the hero, and what a relief that he was able to be saved.

Thank you so much for your super review. Yes, it was a typical scene in Australia in the fifties and sixties. He was indeed a brave dog.

Have you told this story differently recently? I feel this dog rescues child thing is terribly familiar, or is it a coincidence from the other side of the world?
Whichever is not really important the fact that it has been told and told well is what counts.

No, I have never told this story before. I even went through my portfolio to make sure.
There is a contest on at present for a true story about a pet that won't be forgotten. Maybe there's a similar story in the contest, (I haven't read all the entries yet), but I didn't enter it as I was not a hundred percent sure of a couple of the details, as this happened when I was a child. Thanks though for reviewing. Appreciated.

That happened when I was about twelve, so he is long gone now. But he was very special. Many thanks for your very kind words.

What an incredible story. That was a dog, Man! It was one of those tales that will live on in one's mind and get better with time as we see a world that pales in comparison to this terrific friend.

Hi Wendy, what a wonderful
dog! He was so brave saving
the little girl. Other than
Rusty's injury, this is such an
uplifting story. This poem
would be a great entry in any
contest. Have a creative and
blessed week. ~
