Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. I was in third grade with President Kennedy was shot. I remember out principal entering the room and sharing it with us. I was raised in Illinois, but now reside in Texas and I am not at all surprised Friday night football continued. I enjoyed reading and good luck with the contest.

I did not know about your last line; how timely and haunting. And a perfect ending to this piece you've written - saying only what needed to be said in order for us to understand where you were, what was going on around you, and how it affected not only your country but Midland, which was so much different.

My parents were Republicans, but I recall them being shocked, sad, and crying as they watched the funeral procession.

Thank you for sharing this intimate piece of your life.

-You did an excellent job with this from the artwork to the detail in the story.
-I was in 8th grade the day Kennedy was shot, and I have never forgotten it. I think most of us at that time and age can still say we remember exactly where we were when this happened.
-Kennedy and his legacy has remained an inspiration for me, and sometimes brings sadness at might might have been.
-I like your comment about the football game having been played, "I think the city lost."
-The conclusion is also excellent, and I didn't know that Kennedy had said that. In many ways, it was a shame he didn't listen to those who had tried to change his mind about going to Dallas in the first place.
-This is an excellent entry; I hope you do well in the contest.

Everyone knew where they were that day.
Good writing. Good story.
If you read Walter Herbst "It Did Not Start With JFK" you might understand more why the game wasn't cancelled.
Good luck in the contest.

Hello Friend,
It's a nice piece of Biographical Non-Fiction having CAPTIVATING flow throughout from the beginning to the end, and depicting John F. Kennedy's murder as well as his Funeral in a very heart-touching way.
In the end, the words, "I could stay here forever." make the whole description SUPERB.
BEST OF LUCK in the contest.

This took me back. I think we all remember
where we were when we heard the news.

It's a day that bookmarks my life... The innocence before the assassination...

The unwelcome sense of tragedy after.

I was at Holy Ghost School, in Gates, NY.

Mother Superior came over the P.A. system to say the president had been shot and we were to quietly pray as we filed out for early dismissal.

The bus ride home was eerily silent.

I entered our home to find my mother sobbing, in front of the TV.

My world wobbled...

I remember Jackie's suit stained in blood.

Boots backwards in the saddle.

The heartbreak of John John's salute...

Bang.

The death of innocence.

What a powerful write.

I was not yet in high school.

It is one of my clearest memories.

And one of my worst.

Karina, thank you for the review, and sharing your vivid memories.

My grandchildren think I'm ancient because I was alive when this happened. (They're almost right!)

My smartie-pants Maxwell (Age 8) asked me if I was also alive when Lincoln was assasinated.

(He may get coal in his Christmas stocking!)

    Smile...

Too harsh? Maybe one small gift, and charcoal in his stocking?

Maybe a bio on Lincoln? One I couldn't have written because I wasn't alive then?

Author,
Your story is poignant as you write how the President's assassination affected you personally. I am surprised your football team played football that night. No judgment--it just seems strange.
The last sentence is prophetic , in that one wonders what Kennedy's soul felt that day.
Great story, author.
Blessings,
Cindy

I am amazed at people when asked where they were when Kennedy was shot. I haven't met anyone who doesn't have a clear and detailed recollection. Same with the Challenger tragedy and 9/11. These dates were surreal. Frozen in our memories. Your story took me to your day. I saw and heard your principal. You didn't just tell me but took me back to that fateful day. Well done.

Mystery Author,
Not only is your contest entry about your most memorable high
school memory, it's a snapshot of American history. You did a
great job with the details of that tragic event. I could picture
everything as I read it. Those details painted an indelible memory
on your mind your words were concise and precise. I read about
a month ago, the Parkland Hospital in Dallas would be torn down.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes in the contest, Jan
