Hi Helen.
I enjoy learning about various idioms and (often) the various explanations regarding their origination. I'm with you, though a day late in reading this. Elijah is "the real McCoy" in my mind! Nice you posted this to commemorate his birthday...

Thanks for sharing your feel good story and acquired information that teaches us yet again in Paul Harvey's fashionable "And now you know the rest of the story." It's always a pleasure, my dear!

You certainly find some interesting things to bring to our attention. I've noticed quite a few of them have to do with people of African decent who have excelled in their craft despite the hardships many were forced to endure through slavery. I'm glad you are bringing stories of these amazing people to light

I enjoy how you dig out interesting lives to bring to our attention. I'm sure most of us use idioms without sparing much of a thought to how they came about, so thank you for explaining this one. Elijah McCoy was a very inventive man who deserves to be celebrated.

Yes, I'm all for celebrating people like him - not just on Black History Month. Lol. Thanks so much, LisaMay!

An interesting chapter in this book. Something of a treatise on strangulated vowel sounds. Despite the global popularity of whisky I have to favour the pug.

Lol. The pugilist, you mean? I knew nothing about him but it's a funny story. Thanks so much, Jim!
Blessings!

An interesting read about the possibilities for the origin of the expression. In any case Elijah McCoy very much deserves to be known for his remarkable achievements and you have paid him a lovely tribute.

There is indeed some confusion as to where this saying originated as we are offered two possibilities here, but we can safely say that the name originated in Scotland at least. I wondered why Eagles were sometimes called bald Eagles and the word "bald" was originally "balde" an old English word that means "white". We are forever learning Helen, a fine write, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Yes, you're right about the "balde" having a different meaning than the "hairless" meaning we think of now. I'm so glad we keep learning. Thanks so much, Dolly!
Hugs!

You did a great job with this mini bio of EMcCoy, Helen.
When I read the title, I knew exactly what would be included.
I always taught about him and his invention during Black
History Month in February. I hope it's ok to write it like that.
You gave readers great details of the possibilities of origin.
Thanks for haring another lesson.
Respectfully, Jan
