Definitely a powerful picture especially the children reaching for the hand of the soldier, Roy. Your words showed the hatred, the anger and the sadness of not only those children but the adults. They constantly ask, 'Why, me?' But you promptly reminded us that 'forgiveness' is the answer. Very well done, greatly enjoyed. Blessings.

Roy,
It's kind of scary to read this - in an uncanny way, it also reminds me so much of what's happening in the US today. We can't ever allow anything to rest and heal. Rather, we love to rip off scabs and allow the bleeding to continue unabated. So frustrating.
The following lines really spoke to me -- so true!
*
Forgive, forget, let old tales rest,
pursuing not the past with zest.
*
I can't imagine what a trip like that might be like. It sounds AMAZING. I've always enjoyed travel and hoped to see a lot more places abroad - but in the present climate, it all seems rather ... less safe? Idk. It's a frustrating time.
Thanks for another wise post. Hugs-

This just shows what a wonder the English language is. Beautifully written and easy to read. I see elements of Covid and the current war in Ukraine woven in here. Was the intended or accidental?
Glad to read that you are a fellow Greek Island o'phile. I fell in love with Symi back in 1999, a love that has never wavered. It is my true spiritual home. Thank you for the poem. More, please!

Your poem is excellent--skillfully written, with good rhyme and meter, and vividly descriptive and deeply disturbing images of the horrors of
war--because war is disturbing. Dwelling constantly of the brutality of past wars is pointless, as your poem implies. Figures of speech and alliteration are effective enhancements

Well done.
howls harkens dark. - You sure you need all the plurals?
While I absolutely agree with the forgiveness philosophy you preach, I also believe in the criminal justice system. There are consequences for criminal behavior that have nothing to do with forgiveness.
Best wishes.

Roy, that is an excellent poem and your author notes are very informative about your travels and eyewitness account of what you saw and heard. If we could learn from history and stop repeating it. Good work. Terry.

I'm sure that much of what we here is exaggerated and designed to cause be to react in negative ways. I haven't traveled nearly as extensively as you but I've been to Europe a couple of time and Mexico and the Islands and I was surprised to find that people are pretty much to same everywhere. There is lot of hatred in this country as well, sad to say. As you say rumors and made up stories spread the hatred. God has his children in ever spot on earth and Christ died for all.

I enjoyed reading your poem, especially the notes you wrote after. How blessed you are to have traveled so extensively. I am curious if you have a favorite country or continent for that matter.

Through the years of teaching first grade, I saw that young children don't care about the color of one's skin, or the culture somebody comes from. They only care about the person. Children are taught to hate. You're also correct about the forgiveness. I through my life have struggled with forgiveness, but with God's help I was able to forgive. Thank you for sharing another words of wisdom poem with us.

Yes, there is so much hate in the world and the feckless desires of men sadly seem to be gaining momentum. A powerful and thought provoking poem. When will we learn?
