I'm a little confused. You've had three editors and now are editing yourself? Fascinating. I think editors play different roles in different circumstances. For a good deal of my career, portions of my "assignments" involved "editing," which really meant rewriting. I would tell coworkers or clients, just write down what you want to say, and I'll rewrite it. I would then submit the material for approval and without fail I was told, "That's exactly what I was trying to say." I probably missed my calling as a ghost writer. Long live language skills!

Fingers crossed as to my venture. To clarify, the publication for which I am now an editor has the stickler and the guy who is on the verge of booting me.
As to the intervening editor; she works for a different publication. At least, the pieces for her publication are flash fiction, so there are few opportunities for mutilation.
Indeed, you should have been a ghost writer!

I'm a little confused as too what all is going on at the place where you are now an editor. You talk of being scolded by a a lead editor and then an editor loving your story. Then the stickler editor would be horrified that an editor took it upon her self to amend your work. There seems to be too many chiefs and not enough Indians to use and idiom. LOL

Sorry to hear that your dream "job" is in deep doo-doo. Hopefully, things will iron out. As to the editor changing your work, she should make suggestions but never touch anyone's work. She is injecting herself and her opinion into your work. I would push back gently that it was not acceptable.
Good luck

Given that I just got in, I'm sucking it up for now--but soon I shall tactfully suggest that she insert notes as to what she wants to change so that I can compare it to my original. Hopefully, we can work together--ironically, she said she hoped she didn't "change my style" whilst changing my phrasing.

Indeed I am.

The royal plural as in "We are not amused".... oh dear. I am shocked that that editor took it upon herself to re-work your piece without even asking, let alone show you before sending it off to be published!! Surely there is a lack of integrity there! (Plus more than a little arrogance?!)

You've done a great job with your entries in these contests, and really wiping them out and giving the contest circuit a walloping and streaking home with great gusto and you are a wonderful example to we all, well done, blessings Roy

Thanks for that! But no contests! Like you, I don't bother--never so much as honorable mention.

Writing is a matter of taste I guess,

I really enjoyed reading this explanation of how and why you fell into editing, and also your tale of woe concerning your interaction with another editor. Just shows the value of backups.
