Oh those blue eyes of Ricky Nelson! I remember him well. I had three pictures on my bedroom wall in the early sixties - Ricky Nelson, Bobby Curtola and Bobby Vincent. I think we need to add this song to our ukulele repertoire. Thanks for the memories, Sally.

These songs from your Hit Parade are stirring up a lot of memories. Yes indeed the Ozzie and Harriet show lasted a long time and we kept watching it, until the end. Ricky Nelson was a teen's dream. A true teen idol.

Yes, he also played in a western, Rio Bravo with John Wayne, and Dean Marin with a drinking problem, and a few other movies, such nice boys, the Nelson boys, we watched the same sitcom, along with Leave it to beaver. Well done, Sally, blessings Roy

Yes, he did. Ricky was too handsome for the role. They needed Clint Eastwood. Thanks so much for chiming in, dear Roy. Sal :))

You did an excellent job with highlighting RNelson as one of your faves, Sally. The info is perfect. While I don't know of his early tv appearances (1952), I do know that he was popular--make that a heart-throb. It was a sad day when he and the others, of course, died in that plane crash. I know Garden Party was covered by many artists, but the original was the best. I have a suggestion--list your favorites in author notes so we can be reminded of them or make this into a book that includes them.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

This is a wonderful addition to your Jukebox Hits. How appropriate that it be Nelson's last hit. Interestingly enough I never watched the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, but I do remember Father Knows Best. TV was something we were only allowed to watch in very small quantities, which in retrospect was likely a wise decision.
I recognize all the allusions in his song, and the very clear message that it's difficult to break away from public expectation.
This is a wonderful idea you have, Sally, and I thank you very much for sharing and for playing my request. :))

It was a toss up between this, and Johnny Horton's, Sink the Bismarck. :)

I love that song! It is one that rings true with me, you have to please yourself sometimes. Trying to please everyone just makes you miserable in the end. I can't believe how long ago that song was a hit over here in the UK, goodness me, you have made me feel soooooo old, Sal! I'm going to play the song again and sing along with it! :)) Sandra xx

Those were wonderful days. As you said, it was good clean fun and even commercials are still remembered from that time. I watch reruns of this show now.

Oh I remember Garden Party so well. I had two children and left a very demoralizing marriage.. my family thought I should stay because I needed the support.
When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name
No one recognized me, I didn't look the same
But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself
this became my theme song...

Wow! Thank you for the lovely review and personal comments. I'm so touched to hear this. I'm so glad you had something to encourage you during that difficult time. It is so good to hear. You definitely had some life traumas, and music can help us in many ways; turning us back to God. Sending you my very best, Sally XOs...

So very true, Sally. You can't write to please everyone. It's just not possible. And if you tried to your work would lose the authenticity. Thank you for sharing this with us. Ulla xxx
