What a heart-wrenching expose' on the multilayered consequences of an MS diagnosis, the progression of symptoms ensuing and worsening, your daughter's brave determination to fight on and gain her nursing degree--

The sad reality is that she so willingly pushed through her own diagnosis and pain while administering to what I certainly feel is one of the most arduous departments in which to deliver care--the E.R.!

Add to that her assuming a new nursing role and the heartache of having to leave without closure or goodbye due to the (what ELSE can we throw into this basket!)--PANDEMIC...

I'm left with deep compassion and extreme admiration for a formidable woman of strong will, great knowledge and fierce determination!

Being familiar with the hell on earth experience of applying for Social Security Disability (due to my son's deafness and other deficits)--

Knowing the myriad of hoops to jump through, the scads of documentation required, the frequency of auto-denial first time around...and often many more times after THAT...

I bow my head in deep respect for Lauren's miraculous first time approval!

I have always found "Disability BENEFITS" to be insulting at best and untrue even when seen in the kindest light. I know of no one who would trade a (meager) monthly disability check for a clean bill of health taken away forever...

I applaud you, Mom-- It is clear Lauren has had you in her corner every step of the way.

I say to Lauren--if ever a citizen deserves the support of her government it is when a life altering diagnosis ceases the prospect of continuing to be employed--particularly in a profession such as nursing!

Disability is due to a disease she neither asked for nor brought on herself... It is something she is affected by continually and progressively.

It is not, nor ever will be, a definition of who she is.

I am rejoicing that this quest to be approved for what is so obviously her due was granted with a minimum of roadblocks--for which the federal government is so famous!

Regardless that S.S. "deems" her disabled... She is AMAZING!

Nursing is a unique operation. It's not so much what you do, it's who you are...

From one nurse to another-- You GO Lauren!

Sixty MILLION stars (if only I could!)

I fervently hope for treatments that will allay progression, and--because it IS possible...a CURE for MS!

Best news I've read all year!

We were stunned she got approved--it must have been because of the cognitive deficits. She has no obvious mobilty issues, normally, for MS you need loss of use of limb to qualify.

She starts a new twice-annual infusion treatment next week.

Thanks for your support! And the bonussssssssssssssssssssss ...

Every now and then government offices slip up and do something RIGHT the first time! I am hoping the best for those transfusions!--Karenina

Good that she got this sorted out, but I understand her fear too of how she is perceived by society. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

My god, I don't know what to say. She has suffered so much and finally the system has granted her the title "disabled". I'm glad she got what she should have gotten many years ago. I'm glad she is happy with this small victory. Best wishes to her and wish her to get better.

Well done.

She's lucky, in this unlucky scenario, to get approved so quickly. Man I've read and heard some horror stories about the shit show the long haul presents with cases such as hers. So good for her! And sorry for her. :( I've cringed every time I've had to check the box regarding IF I have a disability. While I'm not legally disabled, I do have a disability weighing on my mind. As always, I wish her the best!

Is it the med that starts with a T?
reply by the author on 16-Apr-2021
If you mean Tecfidera--that's what she's been on for the past 2 years--not working, hence the infusion with Ocrevus (I think)?
reply by kmoss on 16-Apr-2021
Oh ok. Yes that?s the T one. I hope the next one works better!

We have similar problems here, even though some can no longer categorically be employed.(no potential employer would, or could, possibly employ them.) so I'm glad your daughter was able to receive disability "benefits", well done, thanks for sharing Liz. Blessings Roy

Liz,

I'm sorry to hear of your daughter's disability. It's a very good thing that
she was awarded the permanent disability status...Especially good news.
Also, good that she is/was able to receive unemployment benefits as well.

Your writing is top here. I know it can be a real battle to receive these benefits.

My husband's 51 year old daughter has MS. She has been in a wheelchair in the past. Then she got better and no wheelchair. Then, 18 months
ago when they visited us from the Netherlands she had a relapse and I had to borrow a walker for her. She seems fine now and works full time
at the Dutch Railway. Perhaps your daughter can be encouraged that it
may be possible for her condition to get a little better. She should never go back to work though...It may be the nature of the disease to flare up
and then get some better. Hope that helps...probably not. I'm not a medical person...As your daughter is.

Okay...went too long again,

AnnaLinda
