This is a beautiful tribute to a man you more than just admired. You felt awe, respect, and love that this man in his own way taught you to grow up to be a respectful man. I can only imagine the pride and loss that you felt that day. Wonderful job!!

Hey JLR this poem, "Grandpa John" is a beautiful remembrance of your role model for life. I had a very important granddad too, so I understand what your talking about. Well done!

George, thank you, we are blessed when we have an anchor that keeps our lifeboats in a good harbor of life.

You brought us right into your household... Showed us this faith filled, loving man--always teaching, even if just by doing what came naturally to his good heart. I never had a relationship with either grandfather... Still, I've seen enough to know this man was not only A hero...but YOUR hero!
Perfectly written...every word a blessing!--Karenina

Your poem does a great job of describing a great man. I really like this part:
His wake ... it came far too soon!
To this day I still feel I have lessons to learn
from a man that I never heard utter one
complaint. Never, did I hear a bad comment
or words spewed out in an angry tone ...
What I heard often as he would look in every direction,
even during the lingering hot days, just before harvest and
say, "isn't it just a wonder ... just look around!"

Our grandfathers were the salt of the earth, I lost mine when I was in my early thirties, and yet, even now, more than forty years later, I can smile just at the mention of his name, or see his eyes, so alive in my photos of him. Your poem said so much about your grandfather, the kind, generous man he was. It is a wonderful tribute to him, and I'm sure he looks down on you and smiles. Well done and good luck in the contest. :) Sandra xx

This is a wonderful testimony to an obviously good, moral, gentle man who was confident in his faith and always marveled at creation. My father had a military funeral, so I know how much that properly folded flag means.
I picked up a couple of potential typos:
turn to hardened -- turned?
say, "isn't it just a wonder -- suggest capital I

You are what I call "A writer for the heart..." This touches me, as it reminds me of my Grandpa Morgan, who I named my son after. Never a cross word, and he would go to any task with strong resolve and positive results. Your writing is wonderful! I have no hesitation of what to say to you in these remarks - thank you!

It is really a good tribute to a good man, your grandpa. These old-timers have so much to appreciate than the present generations. I like your free verse poem. Great work

It is amazing the things we remember from our grandparents and there's always one that stands out. Mine was Tony Tiger Flakes every morning from Grandma. What a wonderfully written poem.
Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day, and God bless.

You made me laugh, you made me cry! This was a great tribute to your grandfather, that sun worn face of his would have smiled at you ear to ear. Beautiful expressions. Love the grandmother line of heavy lifting (where I giggled). Thanks so much for sharing.
