This is an epic part of history that you have presented in an impeccable rhyming poem. It's interesting that organizations like the Mayflower Society and D.A.R. seem to have slipped into obscurity at the same time everyone is turning to Ancestry, 23 and Me and the other DNA banks. I'm pretty sure our family goes back to the Mayflower, but my brother has all the records. Being childless, it didn't seem right for me to take custody of them.

Thank you so much for the review and comments. I think you should have copies too. My records are all on line so anyone in the family can see them and others as well.

What a wonderful poem and a great piece of history, Beth. How interesting to find that one of your ancestors was on the Mayflower and all you learned about your own history. Very cool! Thanks for sharing.

We saw the Mayflower replica parked near Plymouth Rock, the ship was only tiny, you wouldn't have thought it would carry a 100+ people, and the Plymouth Rock though caged, is small too. Yes we had Germans who settled in the Barossa valley and in the south of Adelaide, who make the finest wine in the world probably, they likewise escaped persecution in Germany. This is brilliantly written, well done Beth, blessings Roy
Typo : Less (tolerate) tolerant? 2: In the title (Ballard) ballad

Thank you so much Roy. I really appreciate the review and the heads up on the errors that needed attention. I've seen the replica of the Mayflower as well. I was shocked that it could carry so many people and that such a small ship could survive all the storms.

This was a great read. Some spags some suggestions for flow. Great layout as well.
One hundred (and)two would crowd aboard

Makes it flow better.

Oops! Sorry did they get on after 2 months or off?
should not hurt the flow

In Author note
Holland was becoming less tolera(n)t[e].
when they (dis)embarked at last.

John Holland, a cousin, went along as one (of)several

My sister got us all top do our DNA it has had some interesting results.

This is a fabulous read. I did however note a couple of errors. I'm not a nitpicker, I'd just hate to see this poem beaten because of minor mistakes. In the second line of verse one you have 'there' in this instance it should be 'their.'
In the second line of verse two, you have the word 'obey' twice. Was this intended? Verse seven, second line again. Should 'embarked' be disembarked?
Verse five, line three. You have 'road', it should be 'rode.' To me, your poem would be a deserving winner. Good luck.

Thank you so much for the review and nice comments. I really appreciate you pointing out the errors. A couple had been corrected but the two obeys weren't mentioned.

Beth,
What a great poem and message. My favorite stanzaand the one I think that hold the theme

The estimate's ten million souls,
now in this nation thrive,
Because John didn't die at sea,
that's why I am alive.

Oh...and I think I found a typo you may want to fix. 'By summer less (the) half remained...' I think you meant 'than.'

Nice work.

Love your historical story in ballad form, Beth! I don't think my husband is related to Howland but he has ancestors (I think two) on the Mayflower. Great thing to ponder. God preserved our ancestors to create us! Best wishes in the contest!!

who left there homes behind. (their)

One hundred, two (no comma needed if you meant 102)

King James VIII (Henry) Henry started the Church of England. Or did you mean James I of King James Version fame?

you inheired DNA had not lived, (inherited)

Thank you so much for the review and for seeing the spots that needed work. I checked two sources about the king that caused the pilgrims to leave England and one James VIII and the other said James VI. He was a Scottish king but the sources said he was responsible. Maybe I'll say king. Richard Warren is another on the Mayflower in my DNA along with all the Tilleys.

This site said pilgrims left during the reign of James I.

My husband's ancestry includes two people on the Mayflower but I don't know their names.

Dear Beth, this rhyming poem is a wonderful tribute to John Howland who refuse to die even when washed overboard. It took people of courage to even make the trip on the mayflower, and those with physical strength to survive in the New World.
