I would hope you are planning on getting this published, Jim. I marvel at the flow of your writing and your ease with dialogue. Your knowledge of and adherence to the artifacts of the times keep this authentic.
'Exactly my thinking. Ideally, that would result in an invitation from Bache to talk to his wife, Heather,' said Allen. [Now if she were honest that could produce a lot of speculation about the dead Tom (her brother). I don't know that she would tell the lawyer of her meeting with Hettie. But if she did, and included the aftermath of it, it would throw her brother in the middle of the suspect mix.]

Oh, yes, Jay. Publication is uppermost in my mind. It well be self publication on Amazon later this year or early next because, at my age, I don't have the time it takes to establish myself with a publisher even were I able to do so. I am currently putting my first novel, 'A Reluctant Star' through the Amazon Mill and once that is away I shall be working on the first novel of this trilogy, 'Maid of the Mill'.
I am most grateful for your encouraging commewnts and six stars in this review.

This is a most enthralling story to read and a mystery to figure out. Peter has a good detective mind and gathers details which he puts to good use. I am always thrilled to see a new chapter posted.

You must have a lot of memories from your restoring of this mill almost forty years ago. I hope you are able to put them to good stead here. Certainly, I imagine your description of the water wheel is founded on memory, as must be details of Peter's walk.
I have a new thought for you about technique. When I read a published novel I pause at a chapter's end that lends itself to a stop (point of resolution, or hiatus). I keep reading through cliffhangers as I am engrossed in the story at such a point. Your habit of closing your chapters at a highly active point is beginning to grate as I project my own start of the next chapter onto the end of the prior one - is this going to be another point where we agree to differ? Katherine

These are Fanstory chapters and bear little relation to the chater breaks in the ultimate published presentation. Many thanks for your review and your ideas.

What a contrast in how people talk to Allen, this investigator of the past. I like how you are piecing this together from different perspectives as once people are gone, we will find very different portraits from different people and it's up to Allen to get the real picture. I like how you brought us back to the mill and where the book started but we are looking at it with new eyes decades later.
Interesting phrasal verb difference which I attribute to British vs American English: "The clergyman picked this up" (Americans tend to say "picked up on this."

And one American review suggested I drop the 'up's completely. But you are absolutely right. We are indeed divided by a common language. Many thanks for this six star review.

That's you in the picture? Cool! Visiting the very site where the supposed suicide occurred will add needed information to his investigation, Jim. Could that be heather he hears walking around upstairs? The mill is impressive. I had ancestors in Iowa who owned a mill. Three or more generations back. Well done. Nancy:)

Well, I suppose it could be. A lot can happen in an hour, and that is how long Allen has been away from the mill. You can find out of course on Wednesday. Many thanks for this six -star review.

Jim,
Nice chapter with a lot of backstory and detail. It gives a lot of weight to the amount of work and research Allen is doing.
A note:
Hettie Mansfield was not, at the time of her death, an unlucky ex-virgin unable to live with the consequence of her sin.'
-->maybe delete the 'not'?
Thanks!

But she wasn't. She'd been at it for years. The 'not' is essential to the sense. I am not sure why you want be rid of it. Many thanks for this review especially the comments in the first part.

I continue to enjoy this novel, chapter by chapter. You've given us a few more things to think about. Perhaps it isn't all as cut and dry as we might think? Don't tell me. I await the next installment. :)

I'm enjoying most of all these conversations between the rector and the barrister very much. Now, I wondering what Peter will find out from Tommy Bache. Very glad to see that picture of you and your mill. Thanks for that.

Maybe Allen will get some answers. I am hoping it's Tom B that is walking on the second floor and not a bad person. We'll have to wait and see. I can't wait until Allen speaks to Heather. I think he'll get a different opinion.
