Good luck in the Share Your Story contest. I loved this little story from your life. I didn't start to read books until I was 37 ( critically injured in a traffic accident - flat on my back, bored with TV.) So glad I did. My dad said to me, "you can travel the world in books." Now, I don't know what I would do with out a book or two. Thanks for sharing a touching story.

Well, he associated reading with being told to do something he couldn't or wouldn't. However, I believe he knew the basics and needed someone to take interest in him not what he could or couldn't do. I enjoyed your contest entry. You did a good job with e prompt. Thanks for sharing and best wishes.
Respectfully, Jan

I really enjoyed reading this story. Teachers must teach hundreds of children in their careers, I often wonder if they remember everyone they've taught, or if it's a small number that stand out in their mind. Lazarus sounds like a really special kid, it was great to read how you bonded with him over that summer and how he eventually grew to love reading. A really well written piece. Good luck in the contest!

An excellent piece, Mary. Lazarus comes off as entirely real . . . as do you.
Your concern for the boy, and your dedication to your profession shine through. Your writing is assured, and this memory-telling is well-paced and tightly focused.
Kids like Lazarus often fall through the cracks. But you didn't let that happen.
Best of luck in the competition.
Peace, Lee

Let's hear it for teachers everywhere and the job they do silently, quietly - eventually or occasionally experiencing what I may call a 'Lazarus' moment like the one so expertly described here - who knows indeed the reason for the metamorphosis? - I expect a lot of tender loving care was also in the mix ! thanks for sharing this raison d'etre of the teaching profession

what a wonderful story. And realistically told, especially as you, the teacher, after all your efforts, including the book you gave him, still weren't sure exactly which combination of things enabled Lasarus to read.
BUT, you did it, one way or another!
Also, did you draw the picture? very good.

I absollutgely loved this story. There are so many bright children out there...they need just someone to look at their side for a while. Geniuses in disguise. I hope you find him again...Let us know...

Thank you. I've looked and looked, but I can't find him. I often wonder what he's doing in life.

The way you described him was very nice, I have a good visual of what he would be like. It was short and sweet, with a nice metaphor to top it all off! :)

This was a touching story and showed the dedication teachers give to their students. That boy will always remember you as a special teacher who took the time to truly take a sincere interest in him. Your encouragement opened his mind rather than shut it down. Every child has their own way to learn and by letting him find his own way opened the doors for him to excel. That was a heartwarming story and memory I'm sure you will never forget! Hats off to teachers and all of their hard work!

Bless your heart. What happened was that you didn't give up on him and it fueled and ignited hope. He could read all along. He didn't believe in himself until you caused him to believe. I think that it was probably subconscious at first and then manifested for all to see. Thanks for sharing this inspirational and well written work. Well done!
