What else but a six star review? Each chapter delves deeper into the dark shroud of war...the line explaining: "Course, we all knew deep down that many of us would die in battle before we could, but those were sad thoughts, so we did our best not to think about 'em." just about did me in... I remember talking to a few of my close friends who did make it home and that very sentiment was expressed... Death was a specter sleeping beside them every night. I don't know how any of the coped!
The grace of God and the loyalty to one another I think...kept them going....that and their often unspoken wish to make it home. Your reference to singing "Baby Love" brought back fond memories--for what girl of that age didn't love the Supremes? This is coming together seamlessly! I'll try to be patient and wait quietly for the next chapter...

Comment from Jannypan (Jan)
The opening paragraphs are full of great imagery about the dilemma the commandos faced with the young boy and girl running towards them. That time, Cathy and Bill , is heart-wrenching to think the youngsters were pawns in the war; and, the affect any soldier (Bill) would feel for the rest of their (his) lives (life) if they (he) had to shoot them. That part was handled well. Yes, it was a miracle--great title for this chapter, Readers see and feel Bill's deep faith in dealing with that situation.
Bill's poem to Cathy was extraordinary. I'm thrilled it was included in this chapter. In it, there are so many aspects of what is going on in the 'war' and, also, in Bill's mind. The thought of Cathy and the baby back home buoys his spirits in a time when so much devastation, death, and unknown 'things' surround him. His love and devotion for Cathy and the baby were clearly evident. The poem is a masterpiece as a stand-alone poem and as an important part of this chapter. The imagery, the focus, and the message drive home points about Bill's thinking, his love for Cathy and the baby, and their future.
The way Cathy used current events to ground the year of 1964 was awesome. The presidential race and outcome divided the nation into opposing forces. Her thoughts are expressed well, too, about what she was thinking, how she was missing Bill, and wondering about their future. "Baby Love' by the Supremes spoke volumes of her thoughts.
Similarly, Bill's thoughts when there was a lull in the fighting revolve around Cathy and the baby and all things American. I believe that kind of thinking and reminiscing gave soldiers strength to know there was a possibility they would make it through and return home. However, the thought of dying was always in the back of their minds, too. The ending was intense. It sets up the next part well of what happened, did the commandos survive, what other details will be forthcoming in the next chapter.
As always, Cathy, your research, inclusion of representative videos, and awesome book cover design were solid. Readers know they will be immersed in an AWESOME chapter with more to come.
Thanks for sharing. Hurry the next chapter along, please.

Hi to both of you. So the story is moving on nicely albeit the terrible circumstances of a war that America should have never entered into with cost of so many lives and sacrifices made. Looking forward to what is next. All best. Ulla:)))

I'm so glad he didn't have to shoot the children and that they were alright. I just hope Bill can survive this attack. Your poem is beautiful. I can see why it won first place. Thank you for sharing baby love. It was another I hadn't heard in years.

Hello Cathy & Bill,
Nice piece in continuation taking the story forward, but with not such captivating flow as is generally found in your writings. I'm waiting for the Chapter 29.
I would like to congratulate you on winning 1st place for the poem "Ol' Glory!"

I do hope Bill gets back home in time to see his baby born. It's hard to give birth without the baby's daddy there. So lonely. I can't believe the cruelty of man sending young children out to blow themselves up and kill others as well. What are these people? They certainly aren't human. And what a terrible position to be in, a soldier having to shoot them. In this case it was great that God took them out of it and saved them all. Another wonderful part, Cathy. And Congratulations on your poem win, Bill!! :)) Sandra xx

It's not easy to witness the horrors of war and when children are getting in the way it makes you think about your own. And in this case our hero is thinking about his own that is on his way to join the real world. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.
