A very well-written story and warning to piano lesson teachers not to learn their students the pieces that can drive you to madness when we have to hear it repeatedly.

Yes! So true.
Comment from the13thpoet
Hello again Mrs. Allen. While you know that I enjoy your writings, I have to say that I am on the fence with this. For no other reason that I just Love, Love, Love, this is the song that doesn't end...........yes it goes on and on my friend. Some people started singing it not knowing what it was and they'll continue singing it forever just because............lol
Gonna do a mashup remix called this is the Dreydl song that doesn't end and send you a copy.

Oh, now you're breaking my heart, 13th poet. You're just playin' with my mind here, and there's really not enough left anymore for you to be doing that with!!
Thin ice, Mister!! THIN. ICE! xo

Ah the things we learn to love and hate. Heart and Soul I know and I agree. Luckily I don't know the song The Dreydl Song and please don't send me a copy since I too have a closet filled with "99 Bottles " - Lobber

Ha! And weren't you so surprised! When I taught, children bought me coffee cups (because I drank coffee ALL the time!) Now, I have a zillion of them which I cannot part with and it drives my husband crazy. He is so very sad when I accidentally break one! NOT! AND you have one that will NEVER go away! Well done on this one! Those pleasant little surprises!

Yes, it still LOOKS good; it just makes no sound...which, let's be honest, why does a cup need to make noise, really?
I think one's success as a teacher is in direct proportion to how many cups she's been given throughout her career. I knew you were a sparkler of teacher; now that is confirmed.
Thank you for the lovely review. xo

LOL! I can't blame you. I wonder if you get the dreydl song stuck in your head sometimes. That would surely drive you insane. Too much of anything is a bad thing. You have my sympathy. :)

Great story - now I see that you do not write the name of God. So that's cuz you are Jewish. I learned this from an Orthodox Jew who posted something - also learned that if the mother of a person is Jewish, the children are Jewish. Thus two of my "half-Jewish" friends are actually Jewish. Something new to learn every day.
I liked this - and agree - remember Shari with the "never ends song" - altho frankly I've never heard the "Dreydl" song.
I won't ask you to hum it.
Cute story - and yes, we need to keep our sanity.

I am envious that you don't know that song. I wish I could say that, too!! Thanks for the fun review. xo

Ha ha! All three of my kids take piano. I don't have any particular song I can't take... for me it's when they are working on one little piece of a song over and over and over again, because they are having trouble with it. I never get to hear the song in completion and the song fragment lingers in my mind all day until I'm a frayed, exposed nerve tottering on the brink of insanity. Well done, I so feel your pain.

Omigosh, Carla!! I'm chuckling here as I envision this scenario you describe. I'm so sorry. It never dawned on me how fortunate I am because I get to hear the finished product. (Of course, in our case, the parents DO get to hear it, too, because I teach in THEIR home, rather than my own or a studio.) But that's so very unfair to you, isn't it? Oy! I mean, you shell out the money for the lessons, you hear it played (wrong) a zillion times, and then you start the process all over again --with a different song-- the following week. The parents are the unsung heroes of piano lessons!! xo
I had one mom who, the day I was playing songs for her daughter to choose for the Recital, came BARRELING in when I played "Tomorrow." She literally screamed, 'NOOOOO!!! NO. ANNIE!! NOTHING!! FROM!! ANNIE!!!!" So she DEFINITELY anticipates/understands your pain!!
Anyway, thank you for the hilarious (well, you know, at your expense) review. xo

On the upside, my fourteen year old has been taking lessons long enough that she?s able to teach herself new songs relatively quickly, and her practices are enjoyable to hear! I am so grateful to you piano teachers. I can?t read a note of music and if it were not for my kids? piano teacher, they wouldn?t be able to, either. You folks put music into homes and lives, and I can?t think of a greater blessing.
-
I love hearing that about your fourteen-year-old! She has arrived. (And it's nice for the others to see that, too. It lets them know for SURE that eventually they will arrive, as well.) Hang in there!! xo

This is so funny, and I like your solution to the musical cup that played your least favorite song. I don't think "Heart and Soul" is so bad. The song that gets me Is "All of Me," mainly because at my husband's office Christmas parties there was a woman who always had too much to drink and broke into "All of Me." I'll never forget it. This is a delight to read. judi

OMG. That is hilarious. In your case, it's the association rather than the number of times you've had to hear it. Classic stuff, Judi.
Thank you for this really fun review. xo

You're very welcome. Yes, that rendition of "All of Me" was unforgettable. judi

Yeah. That's the biggest tragedy of all...

I enjoyed your presentation of your memoir. Although 'Heart and Soul' may have been done to a crisp, nevertheless, it has superseded many of our present compositions, at least from my perspective.
I had a delight in reading your work.

This is a very cute and, as usual, very relatable story. Everyone has something that drives them up a wall, and we can all empathize with your feelings. Your lovely sense of humor is evident at various times in the story. I particularly liked your "Safe Place" (the equivalent of my "Wal of Mart"). You used just the right amount of detail in describing the mug. I liked your use of "creamy white" rather than just "white." You had a little more leeway here because the mug was meant to be the center of attention, so the extra detail didn't take away from anything else.
The only suggestion I have, in another of those "only I would notice this" scenarios, is that to "bestow" something is to "present" it. You wouldn't present something to someone's lap. Therefore, the girl would either bestow the gift to you, or place it upon your lap. Otherwise, you had me at "For." I like your new picture.

Thanks very much for this lively and fun review, and I'll get right on that edit. xo

Read the message I sent you. Are you sure I haven't hurt your feelings??
-
Well, it IS what you do constantly, so maybe I'm going to re-examine my feelings about this bold and snotty assessment of yours, you batch.
-
You do that. I will kiss your toes in sorrow and repentance for my evil deeds.
-
You certainly better, you evil little wench.
-
Fine, but please wash your feet first this time.
-
Nope. You need to suffer!! And they're ugly DANCER FEET, to, um, boot!
-
Then I want nothing to do with them. Shoo, shoo!
-
You spelled that wrong. We're talking about feet, after all...
-
I was afraid you?d think I was correcting your use of ?boot,? and I didn?t want to offend you.
