I remember seeing this before. I always see the beautiful woman in it. I think once I might have seen the older woman. One of my Dad's wives had this disease. He ended up having to put her in a memory facility. She ended up dying of pnumonia. Very Sad. One of my friend's Mom has this disease right now and is in a memory facility..fancy name for nursing home. It is so sad to see our parents get this way. Take care katy

How wonderful, generous and gracious of you to care for your mother-in-law for four years. God certainly gave you grace and patience. I like how this poem starts with the old woman completely unfamiliar with the person who saw her daily and after the Jell-O, she warmed up. And the helper also saw a beauty in this lady suffering from dementia.
I was surprised at "scream" because that made me thing something awful happened but I see it was to rhyme with "cream."

Thank you so much for the excellent review and kind comments. It was a difficult time, but we were glad she was in our care at home. She did much better with us.

Alzheimer is not pretty it has no nothing. My wife's aunt forgot everyone one day, her husband stood by her until he died at the beginning of the year. Her daughters took to Houston to care for her. It's sad that life is the way it is. My mother in law is close to losing it but she is 94 years old. I myself forget things. What causes it...no one knows as far as I know. But then again I forget so what do I know?

A kind and hilarious reply. Thank you so much. Alzheimer?s is more than memory but mood and personality changes make it even more difficult. It was still worth it to surround her with love and family until she passed.
All my best,

Oh, my goodness, this one made me smile while tearing up! It is so lovely, moving,
and poignantly descriptive. God bless those--like you--who lovingly care for
those precious ones like your mother-in-law. This one must have my last 6!

Thank you so much for the excellent review and kind comments, dear Janice. The virtual six is appreciated, too. I am more of a prose writer than poetry, but I am enjoying poetry more and more. I think it?s because I am surrounded by such fine poets like you.
All my best,

"Another helping then?"
She raised her bowl in toast,
And...smiled at me once again.
"I'm sure you've been here before..."
What an amazing poem, very deep actions taken towards an old person not aware of what she saw or what she is eating. You gave her a different life for awhile being with her. She was lucky to have you. The rhyming of the poem is beautiful, sounds great. Love Terry xoox

Thank you so much, Terry. I appreciate your kind words and specific feedback. I arranged the ending so many times and finally chose that one. Just for you, I see.
All my best to you and yours,

This was a very touching piece, Sally. My mother-in-law is entering the middle stages of this awful disease. She was a vibrant, intelligent woman full of life until about 3 years ago. It's amazing how fast she has gone downhill. You wrote this with a gentle touch and class. Nicely done.

Thank you so much, Chas. I appreciate the excellent review and kind comments. I am so sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. We had many good days and some real tough ones, especially in the end. We had the help of Hospice and they were amazing. Keep you eyes up and focus on the good days

What good people you are. I worked in Hospice with Alzheimer's patients and the sadness was so profound. I pray to God every day to be spared that malignancy.
You have written a beautiful and heart-touching verse. May you be blessed for your service.

Hi, Sal. Good tracking of a conversation that could really come about with a person suffering from Alzheimers. When I was a teenager we said such a person was senile. Shows how little people knew and still don't know. Bless you, my friend. Bob

Thank you so much for the excellent review and kind encouragement. It was difficult, but glad to have her surrounded by family and those who cared. Hospice was extremely helpful the last four month. I see you still have a good, sharp mind. Your writing is as good as ever. Congratulations on your nomination! Sorry I have taken so long to thank you, I?ve had the flu and tonsillitis.
All my best,
Sal :+)

Both Flu and Tonsil problems...not a good mix, Sal. Get well soon, my friend. Bob

This was very moving. I love how you paralleled the two opposing sides of her, in paralleled words. A very neat touch. I had an old family friend with Alzheimer's , it's very sad. Chuck was his name and he was quite the character (none like id ever seen) before the disease set in, so you can imagine the things he would say after. Bless you and your wonderful family.
