Hi Craig, what a great piece of flash about how our inner greed will be our undoing. The message has political and social implications. Are you referring to climate change, or war? Either one can destroy our species. Best in the contest.

I think there are a myriad of things that could spell the end of us, but most of them are related to greed and pride (I could only fit one in the fifty word allocation!)

War, yes. Wanting other people's lands and resources has been, throughout recorded history, a cause of nation rising against nation. And, of course, any war these days has the potential to be our last.

Climate change, of course. People seriously choose not to believe this is an immediate threat to our existence. How foolish that is. And, of course, it's driven by our insatiable need to consume.

But to my mind, one of the most serious threats to civilisation, and one driven directly by greed, is the issue of social inequality. When 1% of a country's population controls 90% of its wealth, its impossible to achieve that without inflicting suffering and misery on a great many people. And when we create massive underclasses of oppressed and angry people, there is no telling the consequences.

Our continual obsession with want and ownership is what sets us apart from most other beings, and what threatens to do us in.

Thanks for the great comments and good wishes, Pam.

    Cheers,
    Craig

Hi Craig, you are absolutely right. Inequality (especially economic) is the source of the majority of unrest in the world IMO. Thanks for the thoughtful response.

Kudos! That could never be truer. We have become a species of uncaring beings. This is very clever. I am unfamiliar with dribble flash fiction, but I liked this. I wish you good luck in the contest.

This is a nice poem in which I had to do research. You have some words like homo sapiens, apex predator. Here is what I found on this particular site humanorigins@si.edu. that "humans found they could control the growth and breeding of certain plants and animals". The word control, to me means once something is in control, all around should watch out change could be on the way.
Sometimes I read about Australia's Aborigines.
Man will always want to better himself since we have the instinct to do so.

Nevertheless, I like your poem and good luck with it.
You have he right amount of words.

Thanks very much for reviewing. The problem arises because the instinct you speak of to "better" ourselves seems to always come at the cost of hurting others and the environment which sustains us. I'm grateful for the kind wishes and the generous rating -- Craig

Yes how true - we are gobbling ourselves up with greed in all walks of life -nothing is sacred - perhaps in time to come this will be a central tenet of our history -sad- thanks for highlighting the malaise of the age

Hi, Craig,

Oh, the truths you tell in these few words. Greed will ultimately be the undoing of the human race. We take and take from the Earth without giving back, and now, the programs put in place to preserve some lands, and keep the air clean, have been reversed.

How much longer do we really have?

A great little bit of Dribble Flash - good luck to you in the contest.

Ha ha. very good. Yes, or end could well be nigh, and that won't necessarily be a bad thing. A solid entry for the contest, and I wish you luck in it, fellow homo sapien.

Thanks so much, Emma. I suspect when we do achieve our seeming goal of self-destruction, the planet and many of its inhabitants will breathe a huge sigh of relief. Cheers, Craig

Craig this is a very good entry for the Dribble Flash Fiction. Your summation about greed being the thing that brings humans down is apt and correct. Well done and good luck.

This is the absolute truth Craig. Greed is the root of all evil and evil is what is destroying the human race. This is a very good entry for the Dribble Flash Fiction contest.
Great picture as well. Nancy:)

Dribble Dungeonmaster - has a certain ring to it. Can I get that printed on a trophy? Does it come with a cape? ;-)

Thanks for the lovely comments and good wishes, Yvette :)

No Cape, but perhaps an elven battle sword would suffice? ;) ;) Take care down there!! ;) ;) Yvette
