The thematic statement that ends this poem, "It is time that we all heal" is a qote from your uncle's last letter home and, I believe it should be the title of this poem, even though it is possible to understand why you have chosen otherwise, the anniversary of the fatal sinking of the 'Arisan Maru' and consequent death of your uncle.

This is a fine tribute to all who drowned in that disaster.

Sorry, I don't have any more 6 star ratings to use. It never fails as on as I use the last one for the week, I read something that makes wish I have just one more. Wonderful tribute to your uncle. My dad was a POW in Germany, so I relate to your poem. TA. ";-)

Hi Mrs. KT,
A beautiful poem, that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and learning about your family. This is truly something special and I am sorry that I do not have a six! Consider this a VIRTUAL SIX. I want to wish you luck in the contest. This is a very good entry. A fascinating read! Cheers, Fonda

Excellent Poem! The author's words are heartfelt, interesting, detailed
and thought provoking. Thank you for the author's notes - they were filled
with history - they were great. The artwork is perfect and compliments
this poem.

out of grief and sadness, came forgiveness and love. That is the highest tribute to give your father and late uncle. It's a terribly sad story, not only did so many prisoners die a terrible death chained in that ship, but the pain the captain of the sub who ordered its destruction never got over it. So many peoples lives and families are destroyed in war, it's about time we learned to end them. Very sad, Diane, but a wonderful story in a poem entry. Good luck! Sandra xx

A very compelling story poem about heroism, survival, forgiveness, and twisted fate. Really enjoyed the verse and your further notes. We rebuilt Japan immediately after the war, and now they a good friends.

Diane, you have moved me to tears with this tragic yet so beautiful story within your poem. It is wonderfully written and I'm so glad that your father could find the forgiveness within his heart. A poignant poem and a poignant story indeed. I wish I had a six. Good luck in the contest.Ulla:)))

This is a lovely tribute poem. I wonder if you left out the word somehow in the fourth verse would the rhythm be better? That was the only part I stopped at. Not only a great tribute but a good life lesson in healing and forgiveness. Well done.

    Hello Rhonda!
Thank you for your excellent rating and review.
There are 10 syllables in each line; thus, if I removed "somehow," that line would only have eight syllables...

    Thank you again!

Hi Mrs. KT,

This is a wonderful story in a poem for the contest. It brings out a lot of emotions for me, as my father fought in world war two. He suffered from PTSD after the war, and kept his emotions in check after that. It's hard for me to even imagine what he went through as canadian tank mechanic in the trenches during active battles.

We are kindred spirits, you and I. Best wishes in the contest.

Joy xx
