This is very informative I had never heard of Looking Glass before. He and Chief Joeseph were very intelligent. Chef Joseph is best remembered for the statement, "From where I stand, I will fight no more forever."

This is very good. It works and flows very naturally. There is a bit of a preachy tone to the subtext, however. I finger-wagging 'ah-ah-ah' even. I realize that this makes sense considering the topic and the historical context. Doesn't make it, for me, any less annoying.

I'm starting to think that you review the notes rather than the poem itself.

I might seem this way, but I assure you I do not. I read the notes too (which justifies 'this makes sense considering the topic'), but those can be stripped away because I am not evaluating the prose you place in your background information about how to understand things better.

This is beautiful. It matches the mood of Hugo's wonderful quotation. I will definitely read Bear Paw now. There's so much I don't know about the plight of the Native Americans. Schools didn't teach it in my day, since it would have made us look bad.

Thank you so much, Phyllis. Thank you for reading Bear Paw, and if you know a little bit about the history of the Nez Perce tribes' flight from Oregon, the Battle of the Big Hole (near my dad's house) and the final effort in the Bear Paw Mts, so close to freedom. It's heartbreaking. Hugo can be hard to get used to, but he is my favorite poet.

This subject is an important one for me because I grew up in Montana, but somehow I never knew anything about Native Americans except that you never stopped for gas or anything driving through the reservations. Since going back to visit, I found myself meeting so many of them in Missoula, my hometown. I am ashamed that I never noticed them before this. Our race has a history with theirs that I am not proud of...
