I admired your reflections and reinforcing artwork selection, plus notes of additional context. Your "tailgate daydreams" is very evocative, followed by the alliteration of "r's". Well done- Joan

Never leave a place you love in spring -
spring is for beginnings. <-- terrific lines!

I absolutely LOVE Montana. I was there for a week ten years ago, hiking and camping. Saw a rodeo and a bluegrass festival in Helena. Gorgeous country!

It is such a pretty state. When this started to take shape, I was up in Missoula helping pack up my mom's stuff to move her to Missoula. It was spring and everything was so gorgeous, and I was feeling very, very heavy of heart. Is that a thing? Luckily I do get to go back, my dad still lives up there :))

This is just a wonderful poem. Really exceptional. I love the meditation on which season of the year is for leaving, and the way the beauty of the scene pulls the person back. Lovely sound and flow of images, nice discursive rhythms.

An excellent free verse. You also happen to hit on the two seasons that are my all time favourites - spring and autumn - and with just the most beautiful words:

Never leave a place you love in spring -
spring is for beginnings.
For glacier lilies; fresh, new green;
creeks running high.
Sadness doesn't belong.
Leaving is best saved for fall, when leaves
fade to brown and drop.

Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you so much, both seasons are so beautiful in Montana. I miss that, living in Southern California where the seasons are mostly the same - hot.

Actually I really love the title, but I can most definitely understand how it wouldn't fit. I think that's a real flaw with the site. LOL.

That said, super free verse. I was right there with you the whole ride. Lots of great insight in lines like driving into nightfall and the start of another day.

An exceptional free verse friend, Carol. :)

This speaks how the poet is learning how to leave Montana sitting by the Blackfoot River on a spring day, and smoking his favourite American Spirit cigarette, and plans an aimless route, after the spring time, soon to begin leaving; well said, well done. Keep Writing -- DR ALCREATOR

Yes, the aimless route - I'll just drive away from all this mess instead of helping to pack up my mom's things to move her away. Thank you so much,

Some great descriptive images in this great example of a more prose than Freeverse, although the lines of both forms are a bit indefinable. But good writing is good writing, and they all share the same attributes...language. So well done Carol, blessings, Roy

Thanks, Roy, after going to a local poetry reading I can tell you that free verse poetry is a lot like this - in California anyway. Some poems read there were a lot more rambling and sort of conversational than this one. It was interesting to attend.

    Thanks again,
