Beautiful and heart-rending, this chapter. More, I need not say. Below, my comments:
As they say in the game of Monopoly, "Do not pass Go. Do not collect two hundred dollars," or similar("similar words" already interprets to "words to that effect". So you should choose to use one or the other) words to that effect.
That was also one strapping from King Tubbo I did not want (delete this first to), need, or desire to endure.
This paragraph has PERFECT spags!
Then, Brenda Smith told me, "I had to wait to receive the court-approved home study, Mr. West's fingerprints from the Police, and his final background check before I informed you of the situation, Brett. I did not want to build your hopes up too high, run into a snag along the way, and see them come crashing down."

saw-off runt. Ha ha! Dusty West unlocked his truck and I emphatically replied to Rodney's question with, "As far away from this place as I can get. And, I'm never looking back!" Yep, that Hermitage Hall don't seem like a nice place to live. He is one of the lucky ones. That was a good pa. Nicely described and told. BOO-terrific!

Did I miss something? What happened when you returned? A more severe whipping? Good pacing with your seeing the car and doubting your luck. Great moment when Dusty calls you "son." I felt sorry for the boys left behind.
An inspirational story. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Brett,
What you had to go through as a child was terrible.
I'm so happy that Dusty West came to get you.
How nice it was to bring you home with him.
Your story was very interesting to read.

That was a great addition to your story. It had to be a big relief to know you were rescued from Hermitage Hall. Dusty was a wonderful person to take pity on you and remove you from that terrible place. I would like to hear more of your life Brett, Well done. Nancy

Now that's the first time I ever heard someone say 13 was their favorite number. Telling moment, and good choice.
After reading through, gotta say...13 IS a lucky number.
I've enjoyed every chapter of this autobiography. I kept wanting to see Tubbo's reaction as his victim ran away; but not looking back was a perfect ending.
Sounds like the mistakes made over years by your Dad, didn't end up being anything. You were both saved!

A very well-written chapter and conclusion of your life to where you were rescued and got away from the hated place that was more a torture house than a safe home for children

Cheers, for Dusty are coming from this very old lady, who herself was a foster parent to troubled girls, many years ago, In all my husband and I fostered 12 different girls. To me these girls were as much mine as my own children. Bless you Brett and cheers again for Dusty West. Patricia

This is really a touching story. I think the story has an undefined hope for each boy had that they would be chosen, but, they don't want to speak it out loud. I could see the faces of the boys pressed up to the fence, like someone in prison, just heart breaking. I hope King Tubbo did get caught for the abuse he doled out.
