Hi Brett,
This story was really interesting to read. I'm sorry to hear all the things you had to go through. I had a wonderful Mother who was always nice
to me. I had a Father who would have been happy if I wasn't born.

>>However, older children have emotions and feelings too. They need to belong to a stable environment where they receive proper guidance, not just to be window-dressing.<<
I completely agree with you in the above. The same goes for the skin colour of a child who needs adoption - colours of the skin do not have different physical and emotional needs. They bleed blood and cry tears too.
Excellent writing. I think I'll snatch away a few moments from that tick-tock, tick-tock and visit the Brett West Gazette.

Your description of that dog brought tears. The same with foster children who don't have much chance for various reasons they have no control over.
After being pushed, shoved, and batted around like the little silver orb inside a pinball machine, --great simile.
Although homeless, you're street-wise.

wow I love the way you use the descriptions to tell your story. The dog being one, the explanation of suicide and your decision and why, the feeling of needing a weapon ... what a thought for a 12 year old to have to endure. No problems noted

Another fine segment to your story in which you use the comparison of the forgotten child to the forgotten dog in the shelter. My heart goes out to both. All of my animals are recycled, those who desperately need a home. Many people are afraid of the responsibility of adopting an older child that's true. Actually my husband and I were going to adopt a child to complete our 2-child family, but the marriage was too unstable to do that. God provided your adoptive father to you and I'm happy for that. This is the second chapter I've read and I would definitely like to continue reading. You need to be a little more descriptive. Bring out more of your anger, or loneliness, or whatever it is that drove you at the time. Bring more life into the telling. I'm writing my own book on orphans and abandoned children called School of Dreams. I think you would relate with it.

"Well 'Descriptive Measures' describing the lass adopted and older child."
This was your theme and the picture of the dog, was your Imagery...
"Adjective Content was included but in need...
{Color describing You, the scenery, the time, ect."
"Objective Content was much better as you were bound and Determined, not to return to 'Hermitage Hall.'
Thanks,
"For we were left in the woods after the last piece."

I have often wondered if the orphanages get a certain amount of money for each child in their care, and that is the reason it is so hard to adopt a child. Anytime the government gets involved in a problem they seem to make it worse. You were very brave or naive Brett. I see you made it through okay.Good job. Nancy
