Good insight here. Yes, writing is an art, and when you add pictures to make a movie of the story, you have two art forms working together. What is art? It's creating something that affects the minds and emotions of the one seeing/reading/hearing it, hopefully in a pleasant way. Horror stories can be pleasant for fans of that genre, just so you get my meaning.

Oh so many things are being used under the term "artistic expression" these days. I don't even want to go there. Your story is well thought and kept my attention going. Best wishes.

Hi Apelle,

Once upon a time people really enjoyed books which allowed their imaginations to develop much more than a film can.

This is well written, and you have explored many aspects that all writers are faced with. By the way, have you ever given thought to how we're encouraged to post images with our work? Just another example of how we rely on sight more than imagination.

Hugs,
Lou

Ah, the long wait behind closed doors to learn the fate of a manuscript. To many it is an email or letter of rejection. Regardless of the means, the wait for a decision is an anxious one.

Good story. Very nicely penned.
Best of luck in the contest.

-types of arts(,) and I appreciate it as much as anyone
-Almost everything written today is in a celluloid format(,) and as I wait for the fate of my manuscript(,) I cannot decide if it is a good thing or not.

Apelle,

This was an interesting introspective write, letting us into your head so we could listen to your thoughts. I don't know that I agree with all of it, but it's always fascinating to hear other opinions!

I made some notes of things I saw as I read. They are merely suggestions and you may use them or toss them! *smile* If you do decide to edit, let me know and I will happily revisit and revise the rating!

1.) My fate as a writer (will be decided) in that tiny room where my manuscript is
being read.

2.) What (really is) artistic talent?

3.) On one hand (it's) inspiration and originality and on the other hand the mastery of simple, certain techniques of expression.

4.) Being an artist in a world that highly(no dash) values analytical thinking

5.) The reader today gravitates to the movies faster than to the book store.
--> I don't think this is true. The READER will READ. The AVERAGE PERSON may be who you are thinking of...?

6.) The movie (no comma) feeds the need to have a visual setting for (one's) inner revelations or dreams

7.) Potter," "DaVinci's Code" or - Tolkien's books (have all been made into) movies.
--> otherwise they are BOOKS, not movies

8.) Tolkien, Rowling, and Dan Brown have that "something" (that makes producers want to convert their stories) directly...

9.) But, literature in its old classic form, the one I fed (from) in my youth,

10.) spent reading [Chekhov, Pushkin, Balzac, Hugo and Flaubert(period.)]

Hope this helps!

My philosophy is simple; if I read the book, I don't watch the movie. If I watch the movie, I don't read the book. Occasionally, I break my rule. This is very well written. Good luck in your contest.

Oh how I can identify with you. Writing needs to get better and better to complete with movies. No way would many people toil through wordy reads like Charles Dickens and Shakespeare now a days. If it's fiction, it must be fast, lively, and too the point. But that's not all, it needs to have good dialogue, crisp description and sound very believable. Are we up to the challenge? Oh, we sure try to be. And oh, yes, there is a tidal wave of fellow authors who are fighting their way to the surface so they also can be heard and recognised.

The movie, feeds the need to have a visual setting for anybody's inner revelations or dreams. [The popcorn's good, too .... Sorry that was out of line.]

What is Artistic Talent? You've got it. Many here on FS have it. Those who learn from their mistakes here continue to grow.

I liked your essay and they way you personalized it.

Too many writers, and lot of them good ones. Too many movies, with panting
love scenes and hammering assault rifles. I tend to shut out the world and try
to fly that one working time machine-an old book. Your essay is written smoothly.

The concerns outline in your piece dovetails very closely with issues that are almost constantly on my own mind. I know that I can write poetry, I have already had three of my poetry books published by an established publishing firm. Poetry remains something that I mainly do for the pure enjoyment of writing. However, the book that I must write, the book that is pushing and urging me to settle down and get really serious about writing, is the telling of my life and its curious twists and turns. I am worried because I don't know if I can do it, so I procrastinate and time passes.
