HOW RIGHT you are!!!! The line and syllable count are correct as expected from you - great writers rarely miss that hurdle LOL. I could not hep but laugh aloud over the teens I see who cannot tell time from a roman numeral clock or wrist watch, cannot do simple addition and subtraction to balance a checkbook, and have yet to figure out that debit services cost money LOL .... syllable count goes right in there with the rest of these since it requires the ability to at least count on your fingers. Well done and thank you very much for sharing it.

Thanks, Angel. You get the point. Remember when cashiers had to use math to figure out how much change to give back?
-
I do ... now they get confused when you do something tricky like give them an amount over the total which prevents you from getting pennies back LOL. God bless their pea pickin' little hearts,
-
By the way, I had chemo yesterday so please do not hold the late responses against me as I am mentally sound again and trying to catch up now LOL.

Don't apologize. Your friends don't need it. Your enemies don't believe it. Kudos to you for surviving these treatments. I've heard they do a number on the patients. But if it works, that it's worth it. I'll put the white light of healing on you.
Hugs,
Shari

This is superb. I do not recall reading (or writing) a single poem in elementary, junior, or high school. Other than reading Shakespeare's work, (which I just loved) poetry was not a part of our curriculum...I didn't go to college either. At least now I know why. Only after joining FS did I poetry attract me, but I still can't write any of the all too many styles. Too many disagree on syllable count and I get all confuddled and stopped trying.

Sasha, I never heard of haiku or senryu until I joined FS. My grandson learned haiku and other forms in fifth grade! Even had to write some.

This is funny. Those short forms can get complicated. What do you do when they syllable counters don't agree on how many syllables in a word? Great 's' alliteration in this. Your syllable count receives an A+. Let's hope failing to be 100% on syllable count doesn't hinder anyone from getting into college. judi

Yes, you have a valid point on the variation of syllable count according to language. Thanks for the A+

You're very welcome. Sometimes it seems that one's life depends on that syllable count. judi

Ha ha ha although the question is rhetorical I'd say ...no college for you
Unless your college prepares you for life that is...how many do?
I like your tongue in cheek poem
Hard to say out loud
Lol
God bless

Guess if you want to learn about life, you sign up for the military. Hubby got the best informal education in the Air Force overseas.

At first, I thought this was a swipe at the forms, but when the penny dropped, I think you're cleverly implying kids can't count these days.
Why should they bother when they have calculators in just about every modern technical device?
Seriously, it's a bad thing, and your point is conveyed in your usual humorous fashion, Shari.
Best wishes, Ray xx

Ha, ha, this is funny, and the picture goes so well with your thoughts. Sadly, I'm just as confused as your students when it comes to the syllable count, ha, ha. I guess I need to go back to school. Good stuff there, Spitfire.

That's what you get for skipping all those days. Yuck, yuck.

Hi there,
Not just these kids today either.
With so many variations on the theme it is nigh on impossible to deceiver some of the forms. And people keep making up new ones!
Nicely penned.

This is a well put little piece. It all goes together well and has meaning. Unfortunately, in those categories, I'm pretty much STUMPED also. This was excellent, my friend.
Always with respect,

You would think three lines, no more than 17 syllables would be easy to write-- but not if they're good ones.

I guess you speak from experience. I had similar experiences with some really simple lessons, too. I think teenagers have their minds on "other" things at that age. It's a wonder they learn anything. :)

I hate to admit this, but I didn't know these forms existed until I joined FS. Always wondered why high school posted "stupid poems like Carlos's red wheelbarrow. I finally understand it!

Yeah, well...it ain't just high school students feelin' the crunch. Lots of adults seem miffed in designating the differences between haiku, senryu, and 5-7-5 poetry. When you throw haibun, the tanka, Kanshi ( Chinese poetry by Japanese poets written in Chinese...who knew!?), and a myriad of others, and you have total chaos and confusion on your hands...

For sure, Deano. In watching So You Think You Can't Dance, I've learned the names of at least fifteen that have come into being. It all comes down to just moving your legs and feet and arms a hundred different ways. Who knew the body could be that flexible.

Sure thing, Shari. Anytime...
