Having suffered from extreme cases of anxiety in the past I feel as though I can relate to your words. I thought that you captured the mood of the person suffering well in this piece and I thought that your writing flowed well and was well written. I couldn't find anything to critique. Thanks for sharing...Jacob

Hi Linda - I can identify with this well written free verse. The words are written such that it sounds like a rush, which I'm sure is intended. You are not alone - this is a common dilemma. I have suffered from anxiety, on and off since childhood. Mostly people don't know how you feel, do they? They see you at your best. Outgoing and lively - I think that's what people see LOL. Good luck and keep smiling and of course, keep writing. Warm regards Dorothy x

I was so pleased this morning to see that you had stopped by to read this poem! What is so much worse about anxiety now in my life, is that my health does not allow me to zip around and handle five or six things at once . . . I can only do one thing at a time and in five minutes work/15 minutes rest. But my mind can still zip along so I'm always way behind what I'm thinking. LOL I'm thankful that I can sit at my computer and write/review all day (or until nap time . . . LOL), play games so my head keeps busy when my body can't.

Yes, I wrote this to sound like I was rushing, showing how fast my mind is moving while I still am making my morning coffee! I have pads of paper in the kitchen, living room and my computer room so that when my mind says, "Time to write, Linda, here come the words!", I am ready to create.

Thank you, Dorothy, for reading and sharing your thoughts with me of this poem. God bless you and have a pleasant day!

Nice to hear from you Linda - at least your mind is active, most important. So just keep writing and good luck - love Dorothy x

this is an excellent write, linda, you did an excellent job writing this free style poem about running yourself into an early grave by unneeded worry. I enjoyed reading it.

Well 'ain't that the truth!' Linda. Don't you just HATE it when you catch yourself doing that sort of thing, making lists of lists of lists? It's nice, sometimes, to sit back and get real, hmm? enjoy the black rain clouds outside, the smell of moisture in the air, the fluorescent greens ... breathe ... love your little reminder!

Sharyn: while my head is busy with "need to dos" and my hands busy making all those lists (I love lists! It keeps me organized and I check each accomplishment off the list as they are completed so I can see what I have accomplished), my body is yawning and asking myself, "Is it time for a nap yet?".

Thanks for reading and understanding the world of anxiety. Linda

Anxiety is a conditioning of the mind which evokes emotional and irrational overload. Your free verse captures the feelings, thoughts and reactions to anxiety very well. The journey through these stanzas is quite hard as they are uncompromising in the portrayal of the disorder. You use very powerful imagery that is easily relatable and which evoked in me a reaction of sorts eg.
uninvited unprompted unfed
drapes itself tightly around
clinging like Saran Wrap
tightening pressure to every last nerve
Here I couldn't help imaging the breathless and constricting response I'd have to such a situation.
In parts, I found myself going, yes, that's how I feel when I get anxious and then you step it up and it is way worse than feeling a bit overwhelmed:
must get this done
must do that
hurry scurry
let out the cat
(don't have a cat)
then forget about this
instead, worry about that
A compelling and difficult read.

Thanks so much for reading and sharing your thoughts with me on this poem. The clue to reading this correctly is to read it fast. It is designed for the reader to not only read the words but feel the anxiety as they read about it. God bless you and make His light to shine upon you. Linda

Hi there,

Enjoyed is the wrong word for this type of poem but I certainly appreciated it.

It has a certain flow to it. The short lines have an abruptness and terse quality that add to the subject matter.

Nicely penned.

Thank you for reading! I wrote this so you not only had words to read but that you could actually feel the anxiety I was writing about. If you read it quickly, you can feel that anxiety. livelylinda

Now if I had a magical memory I would be quoting this off and on throughout my life. I like this poem, smoothly written easy to read, enjoy and understand for even someone like me.

Your poem moves quickly as the subject written about. Like the way it's centered, somehow it goes well with anxiety and 'hurry scurry' as if it's all driven toward a centered goal, which leads to stress as you write, "then notice that pain in your gut" Yup! That's only the beginning. Nice rhyming too. Well crafted. Les

Lively Linda: well written free verse. It flows and paints a picture most don't understand. The anxiety is worry about something instead of enjoying the moment. A time frozen in place or overloaded mountains. Great poem and congrats! flylikeaneagle

Ouch! Not at all an enviable position (but it sure makes for a good poem - I don't mean to be insensitive, but I laughed at "Let out the cat - don't have a cat..." LOL) I know that anxiety can be horrible (and I have a real tendency toward it myself). A dear friend reminds me that story of the sparrow and that we are not supposed to worry...He will provide. Funny how we always seem to manage though, setting ourselves up for it by trying to accomplish too much...(sigh)... The Saran wrap analogy was especially effective too, as was the 'family early script'. Yup. Wired that way.
