We have one in Ozland as well in a town called Parkes. It's a complete festival and they come from far and wide. Your channeling of Masefield is a perfectly good strategy given the maritime location of the town and the tendency of waves to roll in on rocks every day. Your poem tells the story of the festival and your passion for the gathering with some clever allusions to the King and his music. The occasional bit of Masefield is nicely parodied and adds to the charm of the poem.

Thanks for an insiteful and encouraging review. Elvis was a bit different from your average or even above average pop star, attracting a following years after his death. The older generation, who actually experienced his performances, bring their children and their grandchildren and so it goes on and on.

This is an interesting tidbit about the Elvis crave that never seems to fade. The occasional rhyming and little gems of Elvis that you lace in make this poem memorable.

A witty take on this strange festival, of which I was previously quite unaware. Sounds like a dirty British coaster to me, in the best tradition of Butlins. Your frequent plays on words and liberal borrowing from Sea Fever combine to create a most entertaining poem.

I just happened to be intown that day and the whole place goes Elvis mad. Porthcawl's annual glimpse of the international, Some fly in from all over the world and a Elvis of the year is elected! Butlins had nothing on this even in its heday. Thanks for the review and your amusing observations.

Pantygynt--
I...take it this is not exactly a celebration of All Shook Up over Porthcawl, but rather a sort of shut up, already! Maybe not that strong, becasue there's a certain playfulness in your mixing of rock and roll and surf pound imagery that suggests some sympathy.
I like it. A strange place for Presley I must say.
I visited Graceland once along with a southerner who did treat the place as a kind of sacred site akin to Delphi or Stonehenge. I, on the other hand, was full of irony.
Thanks for the interesting poem.

Thanks for an amusing and insiteful review. It's Porthcawl's only international claim to fame and it marks the end of Porthcawl's summer season and the next poem In the Littoral series that I shall post comes into season. It's called "Close Season".

Sets flared white trousers shaking.
Pounding on Rest Bay and headland,
Rock and Rolling from every shop,
The beat, born deep south in Graceland,
Thunders on Tusker Rock.
From this moment... you had me!
and from the references to Elvis songs... lol... i had to smile.
Of course, I had to look up Tusker's Rock on google, because I've not heard of it... I've been to England, but not to Wales (not yet anyway)... and so, I wondered if it (the rock) was shaped like Elvis' head or something)... I guess not. lol
Anyway, the little subtle hints of: All Shook Up, Now Or Never, The King, Heartbreak Hotel... and others put ever so smoothly into the lyrical lines of the poem, just make you rock and roll gently through it.
You've crafted it well, and gyntly, as often you do... I loved it, and believe it belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Somewhere, Elvis is smiling.

Hi Pantygynt,
Well, I must say this is quite a different piece about Elvis. It seems you put the emphasis on the surroundings as opposed to the impersonators. I liked your originality.
Hugs,
Lou
