A sad song but too often true. I love the phrase: 'You can't burn both ends of a candle any more than you can stop the rain.
When you give your heart away you better watch out for the pain.' Very moving on so many levels. I like the photo you chose it fits the poem perfectly. You deserve the recognition for a job well done. The presentation fits and is pleasing to the eye.

Another great song/poem. You sure have a wonderfully ability to make your poems sing. This sad country music type poem almost sings itself as I read it. Well done and thank you for sharing.

Very nicely written. Enjoyable to read and easy to read with great flow.
To love and have lost is better than to have never loved at all.
Loves missteps are suppose to make us stronger ... sometimes I have to disagree.
Thank you for sharing such a great

Yes, love does have its pain and heartache, but as some famous poet once said "it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." Not sure I agree, because that pain can seem like it creates a hole in your heart which doesn't seem like anything will fill it.
Good rhyming scheme and rhythm as well. Sounds just like a cowboy's life.

Wow! this is a sad song/poem. It goes straight for the heart and rips it out.
Great flow and rhyming. I can definitely see you are a country lyricist.

What a highly creative poem for this prompt - "...you can't burn both ends of a candle anymore than you can stop the rain..." is my favourite part.
A very small nit - "again" (the way I pronounce it anyway) rhymes with "pain", not the 'ee' sound of "been", and everywhere else your rhyme was pure. Also, the cadence is not as fluid as it would be if your meter were more even - da Dum, da Dum, like a metronome beats.
Regardless, there is no doubt it's an elegant poem by a wonderfully polished poet. Good luck in the contest.

Actually these are Country music lyrics, not a poem per se. Thanks for your comments.

A tale of misguided love, people often find out too late that they have made a mistake. Good story line and well chosen rhyming to convey your message. I spotted 2 wee things: Verse 1, you have two negatives=a positive: I can't stand any more. Verse 3, They said.......... Good luck in the contest. Faye

I always tap my toes when I read your lyrics...
as always, you make me want to two step....
that's just how we do it here in Texas.
:)
Well done, Blake Shelton would just love you.

Comment from Gloria ....
Very good love gone wrong song, Brett. At first I thought you'd accidentally changed who you were addressing the song to, then upon rereading it and removing my biased blinders I see that the poem is about a man singing to his partner who has left him for a woman.
The bitter tone shines through well here:
I know that she is waiting with a heart as cold as stone,
but, some day soon you'll wake up and find your new love gone.
You well addressed the theme of candlelight -- the metaphor works well. The cadence strays quite a bit in a few places, but I do realize with song lyrics that is easily compensated for with different phrasing and musical beats.
Nicely done! We all love those hurting country songs.

I fully expect to hear this wonderful song lyrics being sung on somebody's recording some day very soon. These lyrics would compete with any song recorded in the past twenty or more years. Berry Gordy Jr, the founder of Motown Records has said on many occasions that the best songs tell a story. The whole thing about that is that the story needs to be recognizable. A story that no one can relate to is no good. I have no doubt that many people can relate to the story that your words have told. Excellent.
