Some people. You just can't please them no matter how hard you try. You would think that in today's economy, one would be extremely grateful just to be able to go out to eat, have someone else prepare their meal, do the dirty dishes...

Is there no gratitude any more? Has appreciation died, becoming a relic of the past?

One has to wonder...

    Watch a couple of seventy plus eating. Notice they don't talk to each other!

    My wife works as a waitress at a racino, and she says they are the most demanding and tip the worst, no matter how great the service is.

    I can't think of any other job so demanding. Blessings to your wife. My daughter did it while trying to break into Hollywood and got stiffed a couple of times. The only thing she liked about the job was the cash she brought home every night.

    Same with my wife. She loves the excitement of the casino atmosphere, and the daily tips, which during the daytime shift when she works really aren't that good, but hates the pay rate overall.

These diners must have found themselves in Hell's Kitchen, waiting for the students to deliver their meals ...

and even chef Gordon Ramsay couldn't save them!

Cheers,
DW

    Good one, DW. Now, you're one of two people I know who actually watch that show. :-)

I can imagine servers seeing these type of customers as sub human, soar apples, soar greens, or even bad bananas. I never worked in a restaurant but I doubt that slow service is done on purpose. Of course, you have those places were the people working their are jerks and don't care. When this happens, the business closes very quickly.

The photo is hilarious. And, I don't think I ever want to taste a crab apple

    Trust me, they're bitter. I grew up on a farm with a big apple orchard, most of them crabs. Lucky you to never have encountered slow service!

    I do mostly take out over the phone so when I arrive my food is ready.

You got that right, Shari. People can be so crabby and sour when they are eating out. I feel sorry for the waiters who for the most part are working their buns off. Picture is priceless for this senryu. By the way, I am an expert on eating out - no cooking for me. 8-)

    My husband loves to eat out. And I'm not keep on cooking, but in the long run, dinner out takes at least an hour out of my writing time.

You're always sure to find some of those sour diners when you go to a restaurant. Slow service is just one complaint. Sometimes my meal plan doesn't always work out, so sometimes I'm guilty of slow service. I can understand the problems servers have, as some customers are hard to please. "Crabapple table" is a good one. I can imagine a server saying "I've got to take more bread over to the crabapple table." This is funny. judi

    You gotta love that name. Wonder who came up with it. Actually, my research gave it pretty good press.

Some people love to complain just for the sake of it, and 'crabapple diners' is a fun definition for those types.

Maybe they sometimes do it as an excuse not to tip the over-worked and underpaid waitress who I hope 'accidentally' tips their meals over their heads. :-)

Cheers, Ray xx

    I expect you're right about the excuse thing. Tipping meals is a good way to get fired--but it would be sweet revenge.

No slow service at home;
Well-penned senryu;
Good alliteration incorporated throughout;
Easy for hungry diners to get disgruntled--some individuals opt to walk out.
