Hi Linda, Yes, your First Nation are in the same boat - welfare = drinking. Our people and yours are children. Glad you liked the poem. Luv, Kay XXX

Sound like down under to me. One day I would hope to visit the place called Australia. First started as a prison for England's bad boys. Nice free verse. Hope you win.

Mother Earth her faced cracked open
No Botox here - rain unlocks her fears .. love these lines
Government welfare feed our people
Wine and beer rots our bodies
Children sniff petrol cans .. this is the same situation in Canada - suicides, addiction, no , desperation.
Dear Kay,
Your passion for your roots and the beautiful land of your birth, your pain, just shoot out of every line of this free verse piece.
I hope you win. This is very worthy.
Hugs and lots of love from one prosthesis to another!!

My friend, this poem is very special. It is very well written - it is a sad reminder of the cruelty of the white man on our Mother Earth. It also mourns for the once proud people who lived on Australia before the white man. It is so sad to read such a poem. However, these words need to be heard by others. They are needed to scold those who could have changed things but did not.
This brings to mind the plight of our American Indians. They too prayed to their "Mother Earth." The animals, the water, the wind, were all considered to be relatives; brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles. So many wonderful cultures have disappeared over the centuries because of the white man. I am a white man. I apologize for my race. I must do the same to many others as well. I am ashamed to be white.
Always with respect,

Hello my dear friend, Every land has been touched by greed - the whites stole both our countries. Our Prime Minister said "Sorry" to the Stolen Generation - too little, too late. Love, Kay.

Hi Kay,
I love Australia's gum trees and all of its exotic animals and birds. I've held a roly-poly wombat named Angelina and a koala named Buddy. And I love the forlorn sound of the didgeridoo. I wish you could read my journal from when I lived there. Would send you a copy, but it's nearly 600 pages! ha!
Kookaburra love and wallaby hugs,
Lois

Your work simply echoes the call of the land of which you put in poetic form. There is naturalness about it that easily leads the reader to enjoy the landscape (harsh and beautiful)and learn of your people and their struggles. Loren

It really is sad, Kay, that the modern world takes away the thousands of years of tradition, and now it's gone. I have heard of different ancient civilizations, whose only records of their history is what they hand down to each generation that succeeds them, by way of song and dance. Many are now lost and there is no getting them back. So sad. I love your stories telling us of the Australia's history, it really is fascinating. Excellent contest entry, my friend, good luck!! xsx Sandra

great alliteration in ghost gums
I love all the specific detail of creatures and plants indigenous to Australia
also the people and customs
nice alliteration in spirit sleeps soundly
and wombat wobbles - that is a delightful passage
wonderful personification of Mother Earth with her face cracked
compelling closing with social commentary on how things change when children are beckoned to the dominant society, which does not treat them kindly
the contrast between the idyllic setting of the first section of your poem and the harsh realities of "civilized" society is most effective

I find your free verse poem to be sad, educational, riveting. It also took some work reading it as I didn't know what half of the words meant which I scrolled down for definition. It was worth it. I love what you have written here. Good luck in the contest.
