Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

Barren refrigerator goes nicely with the theme of deprivation...most garage doors have a rope handle that when pulled, disengages the door from the connection to the electric motor. This allows you to lift the door manually.

Shall I ship ice cream to get you through this hard time? :)

Yeap, I found out about the pull string from a neighbor when I mentioned my predicament. So the next time it happened (and it did) we knew how to get out. Thanks for the six which put me on the front page.

Entertaining story in a poem. They are the best ones because they get to the heart of the matter and let the reader decide how to react. It's a shame generators aren't the end all to be all. I know plenty of homeowners who cursed and kicked their generators when it played dead during an power outage.

No kidding. A neighbor bought a generator and laughs at everyone on the block when power goes out.

Hi You:-) well, I hope it was at the very least fun cereal with a toy inside the package:-)...geez, that is nasty, power outages never seem to come at the right time...when the fridge is full and when there is enough ice in the freezer to stock the cooler stored in the basement...
but why Procrastination...?

Putting off grocery shopping. No food in the house. Not even bread or peanut butter -the staples of life. :-)

Is the garage door opener automatic? It should have a default to a hand crank...I think that would be necessary for emergencies. My house has one and I recently had to use it. Looks like you had an emergency!

We do have a pull string, but dumb me didn't know that. The next time it happened, no problem.

Good poem, Spitfire. I love stories and poems based on real events. Was it dry cereal? If the power went out, wouldn't the refrigerator stop working and the milk go sour?

Yes, that's why we ate early. L0L Actually, I've read that food will stay good for a few hours in the fridge.

Hi Shari,

It's such an annoyance when the power goes out. So, milk is the only thing left in the fridge? I'm sure it's sour. That cereal is gonna be dry, lol.

Hugs,
Lou

What's in the fridge will stay good for three hours, I've heard.

As long as you have some wine to wash that rotten cereal down, Shari, things could be worse.

Very clever, and thanks for the morning smile.

Cheers, Ray xx

Ooh, I like that. Wine would do a lot of good in any occasion. :-) Moscato, anyone?

Oh boy, been there, done this! That's exactly the reason why at our new house, we have no electric garage door opener. Now, should the power go out, we simply drive around in the darkness for awhile, looking for someplace to eat with P-O-W-E-R! (LOL):}

Well done, Shari!

Fun and entertaining poem, Shari. I know garage doors have an automatic release when the electricity is out, but I don't know where or what it is. My problem would be not having a non-electric can opener.
Smiles,
Indy : )

That's funny. After this incident, I explored the garage and found the release.

The more complex our silly gadgets become the more helpless we become without them. Oh, for the good old days of manual operation, or at least manual override. Cereal for dinner I'm happy with once in a while.

What's more, manual operation built up muscles and kept calories under control.
