It is said that in any game there are cheaters; but that not all are caught. This writing deals with the subjects of honesty and integrity. As in this story, survival in life sometimes force people to bend the rules. It has moral, social and religious implications.
Cheating is present as in most aspects of life. No wonder that in the Author Notes it states that "everyone is considered a potential cheater."
I noticed just a small slip: 5th line from the ending, "lifteed" - remove the extra "e."

Dennis, I am so pleased you liked the story and you certainly did recognize my themes.
Thank you also for spotting my slip. I will correct it. RodG

Good story and from what I can tell seems spag-free. Ihave seen this prompt a feel times and this is definitely an inventive take on this contest. Good details that really help move the story along. Again good story and good luck with the contest.

Wow. I had a friend who could count cards and win most anytime at cards. He said the trick to not being caught, was to lose the small hands but quit after winning the BIG hands. He never would play in the Casinos. Well written story that shows a "Mother" will do what she has to, to raise and protect her children. Nicely done.

You are the first on FanStory to tell me about someone who REALLY counted cards and won. And I'm pleased you caught my theme about what mothers often have to do. Thanks for sharing! RodG

I found this story to be riveting and fascinating at the same time, a good entry in this " two women sit at a bar" contest! This was articulate and well written, and held me captive in trying to follow as well as I could, this method of keeping count of cards and their relevant values! Skilful bridge players do it all the time! Well written and articulate, good luck in this contest, blessings, Roy.

Roy, I could not be more pleased that you found the story both "riveting and fascinating." I had forgotten about how good bridge players count cards. My mother was a bridge champion, but she never revealed her strategies to me. Thanks again for your best wishes. Rod

The interest in this story is enhanced by the fine and accurate detail both of the surroundings and the two main characters. The gradual thawing of Annette's suspicions and guarded manner is well-handled. You create good tension by not letting her warm to Heidi until near the end. Altogether an enjoyable read and one of the best in the contest.

My first six star of the week, and it goes to you, my friend. This very well written story is fresh and takes the reader into the story as a listener and observer. The storyline was excellent, and the dialog was right on the money. It held my interest very well, and I enjoyed reading it. Very good job, my friend.
