This is quite well written, and I very much enjoyed listening to it. It is a shame that the people of Germany were that brainwashed and that afraid of that awful man. Your story flows very well when read aloud. Patricia.

Thank you. It was a terrible time back then. Hopefully, history won't repeat itself. Gretchen
Comment from Wayne Fowler
Well done.
And so goes America today. People wearing the red hats with the stupid, inane words of MAGA, an appeal to the days of bondage of all to the delights of the few.
I will not wave the flag.

Thank you, Wayne, for the six and the heartfelt review. I do love our messed up little country. Gretchen

That was so well written, Gretchen. I could understand why she didn't want to cheer for him but at the same time I could understand her husbands determination to make her. I am sure it's a bit like some of the Russian people today. Many are scared of Putin, knowing to voice their hatred would be dangerous, others who are fanatics and love what Putin would turn on their best friends if they criticised the man, much like the Nazi members did. The world doesn't change much, does it, my friend. Well done my friend. :) Sandra

No. We certainly don't seem to learn from our mistakes. Thank you for this. Gretchen

You have painted a frightening scenario with your words - and unfortunately this sort of situation is not an isolated one in world history. It brings up the question of where to find the line between following what one believes to be right and the compromise which will avoid certain death. Very well done. You force the reader to think of these ethical questions and the power of those who enforce allegiance.

Thank you so much. History changes the names and locations but always seem to use the same script. I appreciate your feedback. Gretchen

There are many like him out there. Reward the idiots who believe and then get them to do your dirty work. Rinse and repeat. Thank you for this. Gretchen

Gretchen,
What a great story if not sad. It is too bad people had to act like they adored that evil man or face the consequences. Adolf Hitler was an evil man and hopefully he is burning in Hell right now.
Well done

For me personally I think you have told a story that not many would know
(I surely did not think this) I now have the image of this man turning on his own people, very well written, best wishes for your contest****kahpot

Thank you. He was a maniac. I'm glad you enjoyed the story. Gretchen
Comment from Debbie D'Arcy
So tragic the way the people were intimidated and oppressed in this way. Marguerite's response conveys the horror of it all in simple but effective dialogue. I don't know if you intended to write Adolf(o)? Also (c)ool picture. And in the story - Everywhere (one word). Thank you for sharing your excellent piece, Gretchen. Take care Debbie

Thank you for reading this old story. I appreciate the nice review. Gretchen

Yes. Indeed there were many Germans whose hearts were in the right place, but they were too frightened to do the right thing. This reminded me of my recent reading of Slaughterhouse Five.

I thought this was very powerful. I congratulate on your unique and thought-provoking choice of subject. I do think it works as a flash, but I had the feeling the ending could be sharper, somehow - take us just a little closer to the edge before your end the story. (Maybe an SS officer notices Marguerite dropping the flag & stars toward her - something like that).
