Would of been excellent if someone would of danced with you. Then you could of conveyed the sheer panic of wandering hands during a slow dance.

That was sure a different time. Even in the eighties things was so much different than now. So much simpler. Great poem and thanks for sharing.

I wasn't on-line in time to vote for this poem, but I certainly can review it now. An excellent description of how we all feel when insecure, unloved, awkward--not just as adolescents or teens but also as we grow up and age.

I LOVE that song :-)
great visual of the popular girls nuzzling up against the jocks as the wallflowers watch
you capture so well those awkward years that are not nearly as happy and carefree for many teens as some would lead us to believe :-) Brooke

Afraid someone might ask me to dance,

afraid someone won't. ... love these lines ... were you writing about me??

What a great poem, Betty! You captured perfectly that wallflower feeling I had all through my teen years!

You gave me a great review and I thought I'd pop in to say hello. Glad I did. This one really made me smile ...!

Unfortunately I never got to go to a high school dance. My father wanted us to work on the farm so I took my high school by mail. Sounds like it was an emotional thing according to your poem, so not sure I missed anything good.

Very well written, like I was almost there feeling the anxiety. Great entry for the contest.

Blessings, LaVonne

Thank you so much. Yeah, the dances were a little over-rated except for the popular kids.

Your poem certainly brought back those awkward feelings of high school dances.Your use of assonance in line 6 gave me the feeling of slightly stumbling in the dance. The flow of the poem is a bit awkward and well reflects the feelings of the wallflower. Well-chosen adjectives provoke remembrance of anxiety past.

This was really tugging at the scrap books of days gone by. How does one harness such energy, display such feelings of ardent longing, and a yearning need to 'fit in', that they experienced so long ago? Because, they've been to the 'places' of which they write, that's how. They've been seated up against that wall, in that auditorium, watching, waiting and anticipating for someone...anyone! to ask them for a simple dance. One simple dance. maybe, that time did come, and they danced the night away. or, perhaps they remained there, simply...waiting.

I hope your experience that evening turned out to be a pleasant one. I wanted that for you, as I read it. Some memories do remain with us for a lifetime....

Thank you Dean. Yes, this was written from a true experience. I did not dance with anyone that night. Sigh. But things did get better. :)

This is a really good poem for the 'Emotions' competition. Something all girls have felt at some time or another when in a dance hall. Today it's not like that. You can go on the floor alone and jive about - it's called clubbing. Not so romantic though. I really identified with your poem. Good Luck in the contest. Regards Dorothy
