Hi there Sharyn
When I lived just up the hill fro the Punch Bowl, Memorial Day was such a special time. I loved to be there as colors were posted and taken down. Lovely poem here

A compelling turn as the speaker goes from a focus on the party/barbecue aspect of Memorial Day to one on the graves of the fallen and then brings it back full circle to that bouncing ball - a perfectly constructed and thought-provoking poem :-) Brooke

Memorial Day must be celebrated. After all, those boys won't bounce a ball again because they died in order to make the boys bounce the balls. Sometimes governments are wrong, but a soldier dies for his country even in the wrong causes. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed this poem. I like your take on BBQ's and bouncing balls. Then death of the soldiers, the real reason we celebrate Memorial day. You did a great job!

You've nailed the essence of memorial day, my friend. Although I think you should include women too...just my thoughts. Well done with this poem. Good luck with this.

women will be included next time for sure my dear - being Australian, the world wars, and Vietnam, our soldiers were still mostly men ... and I grew up with stories about the 2nd World War and the Burma Railway ...

How many times do we lose sight of the reason for a special day? How many times does the message get lost in the celebration?

A very touching poem, Sharyn, that reminds us of what the day is rather than what's on the grill.

Ah, but you start with such a flourish of happiness, then get to the whole sad focus of the day - those lost in war.

Your words have immense weight, Sharyn. I got the chills at the end there.

Tragedy - beautifully expressed.

Wow... You just pointed out the reality of the holiday. We celebrate and enjoy but hardly think about this side of it.
