This poem captures the emotion of the dangers and futility of a by-gone culture. At first I was put off by the hyphenated style but came to accept the flow of the lines. Nice work.

That was fantastic poetry... Smooth, easily written telling a story's my of us here in the United States have no clue about. Your poem can easily stand by itself, but couple it with your notes just completes it.

What a great picture to introduce this poem. The author's note is appreciated as it gives important historical background. The poem itself uses simple language with a clear rhyme scheme to describe complex and sometimes gruesome events. What i liked best was the very clear imagery here--shoes of lead, baskets full of pearl shells, brass diving helmets, silica sands and sapphire seas. The images really bring the poem alive, thanks!

This is a very informative poem with a lot of emotional tones relating to the loss of so many over time who were seeking pearls. The picture is a lovely enhancement to the theme. I enjoyed reading this very much.

You did a superb job of telling us about the diver in a past century, and I feel you were quite accurate. They really were in their graves floating in their funeral suits. But they weere trying to make a living the that 'oh I might just get rich mentality.' Great rhyme and flow in the poem. I especially like the last stanza with the lines 'Fear and sweat fog the glass Ghostly divers - funeral bells. Also the turn from your beautiful descriptions in the beginning to the sadness of many of their realities in the end. Very well done and deserving of a six for the execution and presentation. Joycexx

Wow! Thanks so much for reading and glad you enjoyed part of our history. Our pearls are the best in the world today. The natives were paid a pittance and as usual - white culture benefited in a huge way, even Queen Victoria was sporting a 'black drop pearl' around her chubby neck and resting on her ample bosom!
