Hello alexgardiner,
A sentimental poem filled with memories and hope for the upcoming year - 2013. Ahhh, some say that "13" is an unlucky number while others feel that 13 is a lucky. In 2014, we'll know the truth.
This poem reads and flows well. I particularly liked the following:
Amber fluid taste
(Me thinks that's the champagne - lol)
And:
Get the house ship-shape an' spick an' spam,
food a plenty, turkey, chook an' Boiled ham.
(Pass the ham, pass the amber fluid and lots of it, and
pass the ham again. Any "patatas?"
A happy poem. Happy New Year! Bonnie Lass Bloomer

Alex, I haven't come across anything of yours for a long time, so I am glad to see this piece popping up.
Happy Hogmanay to you and yours as well and I hope 2013 treats you kindly.

This brought back some memories! As a youngster, living in an Irish/Scottish community, I was the one called on to visit all the neighbours' homes with a lump of coal (I was tall and dark in those days ... still tall, but ...) Thanks for stirring the nostalgic embers, and Happy Hogmanay!

solid use of rhyming couplets
good alliteration in fun, first foot
and in bit black bun
as always, excellent use of dialect
lovely detail and a wonderfully warm tone
Happy New Year to you, too, Alexander - sending you smiles across the ocean :-) Brooke
