This is well-written Susan as your stories always are. It is good to use our own past experiences to find stories. This shows you really had a good heart even as a child. I imagine most adults would have reacted much as your father did to try to reassure the child but not stop to help.

Another huge hug Beth! I'm just delighted when you like my stuff. I am learning tho, that my posts are mostly vignettes, or essays, not stories? I need to do dialogue. But it's irritating to me. I don't know why. I'm so weird. But, yes, dad didn't mean any harm, he just wanted to get home. I know now, the fatigue of adulthood. I didn't then. xoxo. Susan

Many sad images in this short piece. I find that those things we were helpless to do anything about when we were young are the memories that come back to cling. You did a great job describing the heat and the mirage of the water. Very nicely done.

Hi Susan,
This story I so sad and even more so since it is true. Your description of the old horse dying is outstanding and I felt as if I were watching it with my own eyes. That was a traumatic event for a 9 year old and I am sorry you had to witness it. Well done....blessings, chey

Hi Chey! Thank you and yes, I still wonder about that poor soul. Just standing there patiently switching it's tail. Dad did slow down, but wouldn't stop. It was a dark colored horse too. In that heat??? Oh God. I wish I could have known. BUT, maybe it's better that I didn't. Then. Thank you my friend...xoxo. Susan

How sad. However, you did a good job writing this. One could easily picture the scenes within their mind.
Oh well. With death at least the horse no longer suffered. JW

Hi Jonathon! Thank you so. I have always wished I could have saved that poor thing. Dad wouldn't stop tho. He was 'pinning his ears back' as he would always say. I don't know why this has stayed with me for 49 years...odd. Well, thank you and blessings my friend. Susan

What a poignant story. Something that left an indelible impression on you. I felt the weariness and sadness of the old horse. A cryable write. This prose works also as a metaphor about life as we age.

Hi Shari! Thanks! I have no idea why that stayed with me. And for 49 years. I tried to use it for a longer story last year and it didn't work. Then I saw this photo! So odd. Well, thank you again. I hope in reality he/she did not suffer. xoxo. Susan

This is so incredibly sad! I feel so bad for that poor horse. You have a good heart, don't blame yourself. Very well written, heartbreaking read.

Hi Darla! Thank you so much. I will never know...it's so odd how that has stayed with me for all these years. I just hope he didn't suffer. But suffering is a fact of life. I hate it. Thank you again dear. xoxo. Susan

Hi Sweet! I need to forget about that. But it's stayed with me for 49 years. ODD! I wish I could have done something. You know how kids are. And I had the same thing with a lost pup at the state fair one year. Mom and Dad refused to let me have it. I had to turn it over to a gruff old guy. God. I hate it. Just too much mean things in this world. Thanks tho...hugs! Susan

Sometimes God speaks to us through the mouths of babes. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very good read.

Hi again C! I wish I could get the image of that horse out of my mind. But it's here and will be all my days, that's for sure. This was in your state too, when we were returning from the ocean, headed back to this hell-hole. I wish, no. I can't do that. We cannot go back. Thank you again my friend. Susan

Well written piece full of sorrow and grief for the child as well as the poor old horse. I frankly couldn't read all of it... just skimmed it because I love animals and I'm way too sensitive to think about them suffering.

Dear Phyllis...I'm sorry, but to know you appreciate my effort is nice. I don't know why for sure, but I'm just a bag of sorrow. Thank you for being here and I send you a hug. Susan
