Well this was superb Jimi. I'm so pleased I found it today.
You and I obviously are in full agreement as to the atrocities white man forced on our American Indian tribes.
I thought your poem was very enlightening and your author's notes even more so. I look forward to other poems in this series you have begun. BRAVO!!!

Judian, oh my thank you so very much. Yes, I am anxious to get started and post these. The speeches are poignant and gut-wrenching. If you have not ever read Speeches by the Native Americans, I encourage you to do so. thank you very much.. jimi

Bravo! I have long protested the treatment of the 'civilized' tribes of the eastern US as the worst example of our inhumanity to man. My first wife was 1/8 Cherokee. The Cherokees had a written language, businesses, farms, and some even held slaves like their white neighbors. Some may have been runaway slaves who took refuge in Indian tribes, even becoming members with equal rights. I have long labeled Andrew Jackson as our worst President for his role in the 'Trail of Tears'. It is one of many black marks on our American system of justice. Though the institution of slavery was bad, the outright barbarity of our reactions to our aborigines is atrocious. Today, the Native Americans in all parts of US, including Pacific islands have legal equality with us who descended from white Europeans.

I only review significantly themed entries. I am not primarily a critic of poetry, but a thinking human being. Thank you for your response. I need some massaging of my ego from time to time to time to keep the circulation and nutrients necessary for productivity myself. I enjoy your entries, even when I do not review them or even comment. I read at least the first lines of every one you present. This one was about a subject close to my heart. I am a white Anglo-Saxon mix with other European ancestry. Thank you.

A grand display for history and man's sake. It seems as if we are destined to go on and from the essence of this, it is worthy.
Will not our Great Father come there also? He loves his red children, and his tongue is not forked"

Jimi,
This is an excellent poem about the dispossession of the American Indians. I enjoyed reading this post and found nothing to criticize.

Jimmi, gorgeous rendition of the specific speech. I am anxious to see all these works
I live on the edge of the Navajo reservation and am a minority as a white woman, here. Been here 25 years.
Would love to see your writing for this tribe, The Navajo. Also the Ute live close by as well.
Thanks for honoring them"

I like a good war and history poem
It takes talent to write a poem that kept my interest and to think it composed from a speech

You did a wonderful work here Jimi. Taking a speech and transposing it into a poem is not an easy task to undertake. What makes it even more difficult is if your day is filled with interruptions. However, as professional as you write, you could compose a great poem onboard a plane in a hurricane! All aside, the Trail of Tears was a horrific experience for the Native Americans...degrading, deadly and deceitful.
As a social worker , I was involved with at least two cases which involved ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act) and worked with two different tribal councils for a short period. My experience in working with them was both rewarding and educational...I have great respect.
I know little about the Trail of Tears but your poem has inspired me to research more about it. My feeling is that is what great poetry is all about....inspiring emotion as well as curiosity...you have accomplished this! Well done...I am not permitted to give you six but my heart and mind has awarded such. I could read your genius works for hours on end, you are that talented! God Bless...

I've read several books about the Cherokees and the "Trail of Tears." and the stories are so sad I can hardly bear to read them, but I feel I need to hear their story of betrayal and of Andrew Jackson's part in it. As a people responsible, we need to hear it. I admire the way you have turned a speech into poetry. The words are touching and you have used them well to do justice to their story. Jmort

Great story in a poem.
Did a short story on this time in history and the Trail of Tears, but set in modern times.
You obviously know this story well. If you have a moment and can take the time please read my story "Golden Sparrow"
I've done extra edits on word document, not all translated to FS, but your opinion as to the honour paid to this tribe would be appreciated. ingrid
