Such a well penned read my friend! I too have a mental illness and no one would know unless I was to say something yet the term 'mental illness' carries such a stigma it can be daunting to bring it up with new people. No changes needed as fast as I can see, thanks for the fabulous read :)

It took me a long time to be able to use the term mental illness. I have decided though at this point in my life, I want to do what I can to advocate for those with mental and/or physical disabilities. I have done some locally, but this is really just the beginning of that journey. Thank you for your review. Hopefully, I can write more on this subject from time to time. Debbie

I applaud your use of this letter to draw attention to the myths about mental illness. In writing this you have shed light on many facts that the majority of people are not aware of. You set things out clearly and frankly. Good for you!

This is a very good letter.
It is very moving.
And Powerful.
And you are right people do not understand mental illness and so people with mental illnesses aren't treated as well as people who have other illnesses, and many health insurance plans won't cover therapy for mental illnesses but they'll cover you if you break your leg.
It is good that you are making people think. And teaching them as well.
I know this took courage, and I applaud you for your courage.
Nice to meet you.
And good job.
Kathryn

Nice to meet you. I try to work as an advocate for the disabled and elderly as they (we) are treated as second class citizens. Thank you for the lovely review.DEbbie

Hi Debbie,

This letter to a friend speaks the truth in every line. Depressive Disorder is a common thing in this day and age. It was the same long ago but no one talked about it, probably for the same reason you point out in this letter. Medication is such a God send and I am glad you are doing well....blessings, chey

Debbie; It IS incredibly cruel that those of us who have labels known as mental illness, are always treated differently. Somehow, any problems arising in relationships are blamed on us. We must be seeing things in the wrong light - because of our illness. You are not alone, and I know you already know that. Thank you for your honesty. ~patty~

Debbie, I am so happy to hear that you have opened yourself up enough to share this news. In the realm of creative activity of the brain, (the same place where depression resides) are you able to bring inspiration, beauty and the art of writing to those around you. I love you ,darling.

Debbie, this cannot have been easy for you to write. Thing is, we know you through your writing, and so why should we treat you differently now? The up side is that we know there is a problem, and can be here for you when things become difficult, as they do for everyone from time to time. So think good thoughts, take your meds, write lots, and let us know if you need us. Hugs. Nancy

Your conversational approach to explaining mental illness to a friend works very well. The stigma isn't what it used to be, but understanding something so internal must be difficult for some people. Thank you for writing this brief, helpful piece.
