Thanks. You are very kind. This is one of my favorites. I like writing spiritual poetry so much I am teaching a class on "The Bible and Poetry" in November on this site.

I might write something spiritual as my next poem. Can't say it's going to be very happy though. But I can almost guarantee it'll be good. Our these classes free?
reply by the author on 11-Sep-2011
Unfortunately not, they cost ninety dollars--I do make sure you receive your money's worth, however.
reply by TaraAnn.yo on 11-Sep-2011
Oh I see. I'm not sure if I'll be able to. But I will look more into it.

Thanks! PayPal does have a deferred payment option, if that will help.

These were okay, but they weren't sonnets. A sonnet is 14 lines long. Yours are all 18. That could be a new form of the sonnet, I suppose, but I didn't really expect that. Anyway, an interesting take on your life and history. Good rhymes and a good job. Mark Littleton

I followed the insructions for the contest. Thank you for your review.
reply by the author on 04-Sep-2011
I reviewed the rules of the contest for clarification. The sonnets called for were heroic sonnets, which are eighteen lines long.

A lot of hard work went to this piece of literature, but it was well worth the effort judging from the result. You have created quite a superb crown of sonnets. Your use of rhyme is excellent and I can find no fault. It is perfect just as it stands. Thank you for sharing this opus with us.

Dear Alvin,
This is the most fabulous spirtual writing I have seen
on FanStory as yet.
The Sonnet, which has to be the most difficult kind of
poetry, has me stunned.
As I was reading this, I could not help but think that
you are SPECIAL in more ways than one. You have truly
shown a side of you which I have never seen before.
I, for one, love spiritual poetry and have devoted many
hours trying to improve it. But in no way, have I come
upon a sonnet, which I realize has to be the most difficult
writing of all.
God bless you and this gift you possess.
Your friend and fan, Marie

Thanks for the exceptional review. This is one of my favorite pieces and, as you can see in my profile, it won an award.
reply by MAMONIA on 20-Jun-2011
You most certainly deserved an award for this. It's unbelievable!

Thanks. Are you considering The Bible and Poetry class in November or blank verse next month? I can't remember.
reply by MAMONIA on 20-Jun-2011
I would love to try the Bible and Poetry Class. Sounds very interesting.
reply by MAMONIA on 20-Jun-2011
Can you explain what "blank verse" means.
reply by the author on 20-Jun-2011
Hi there! Blank Verse is verse written in iambic pentameter that doesn't rhyme. Shakespeare often used it. There's a good example on Poetry Dances. Go to Home on the above tool bar and select Poetry Dances; there you will see examples and descriptions of various types of poetry. The example for blank verse, The Fortune Teller, is quite good.

Spiritually uplifting, truly descibes the state of mine after going through your poem.
I must say your note on sonnet is very useful and guides particularly budding writers like me.
Very nice poem indeed.

Hello Alvin...
These sonnets are exceptional and as a work of faith besides. I know how difficult the crown is. LOL.
This is an informative and poignant work. I was really touched by these verses:

A child was born to Mary and her spouse
in Bethlehem. They were without relief--
In poverty, without a home or house,
For all they owned was a sincere belief

I see why this was a winner. Fiondly 'n hugs. Rebecca

I enjoy reading and writing spiritual poetry. I thought your poem was beautifully written and it held my attention. I would not change a word of it. It is one of the best I have read. Very nice picture choice.

This is very impressive! I had no knowledge as to what a Sonnet was until now, and It DOES seem like it would take some time to put it all together. Great work...I could learn a lot from you! :)

Thank you fo the exceptional review; I am quite grateful. If you wish, my Religious Texts/Poetry course is now available for registration. This is the last month to sign up for a class and receive a twenty-five member dollar gift card. The class will take place in May. Seven seats are available. Thanks again for a good review.

Your very welcome! and YES, I am very interested in taking your class. how do I sign up? I am still learning how everything works, since I just joined this site yesterday. Let me know when you can. Thanks! :)

Go to Classes on the above tool bar and click on Available Classes, then click on Religious Texts/Poetry. Read the class description and if you are interested (I hope you are!), hit submit. The charge for the class is $90 (much less, I believe, than similar classes online) and I shall make sure you receive your money's worth. Again, if you sign up now, you will receive a free twenty-five dollar member gift card. If Religious Texts/Poetry doesn't interest you, I am also teaching a haiku class in April and a class on Shorter Poetic Forms, concentrating on haiku, senryu, tanka, and cinquains in May. I'd love to have someone as enthusiastic as you in one my classes. By the way, I am a Southerner, too, athough I grew up in the Southern diaspora (in Arizona.) If you have any trouble negotiating the site, please feel free to contact me.

Very nice writing and story line. But the flows were a little off beat, The rhythm was not there, but the story line sounds so severe, it carried past the off beat flow, and carries the whole poem. It's very nice writing in all. Check out some of mine sometimes, your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your review. I am a bit confused, however. I don't understand what you mean by the flows were a little off beat, the rhythm was not there; haiku, at least as I understand them, should have the Japanese aesthetic of asymmetry.
reply by the author on 04-Feb-2011
Thank you for your review. For clarification, I can't change the poem, as it already has won commendation in non-FanStory contest (see my profile.) I have checked the poem for meter many times. For clarification, could you give me examples of where the flows were a little off beat, the rhythm was not there? Thank you.

Sorry for the first reply; I thought you were reviewing a recent post, which was a haiku.
