What a great poem.
The way you describe and portray the danger to the sheep, nullified so that the predator is the one who does not survive.
Meanwhile, the protector is their real enemy, as from him, there is no salvation, nobody to stand in the way.
A great bit of writing.
Tim

I thoroughly enjoyed your poem, it has dark humour, a great story and I loved the rhymes and metre here. Thank goodness I can read a poem with good metre and something that is inventive and clever for a change! I found your poem totally delightful, unusual and funny, skilfully written and very entertaining.

Suggestion for this line for the sake of metre:
("Amen" is what the children say)

Thank you for doing this, Craig. This is such a tough read. But then it should be if it is to do any good. We humans need to feel guilty for taking innocent animal lives--animals who are so trusting and who do no harm.
Your last stanza is the most powerful. Comparing the shepherd to Brutus is the perfect analogy. Timely as well with the Ides of March approaching.
We should be caretakers of the animals on earth.

Thanks so much for the wonderful comments, Debbie. I thought it might be a different approach from most. We often are conscious of the ways humans betray each other, but not the fellow creatures with which we share our planet. Very grateful for the lovely stars as well. Craig

Your poem is so enjoyable! That last stanza was brilliant. The "Ides of March" ties everything together so well. I'll remember your poem after saving this. It's so well written.
